I've ordered a Lyman 31141 173 gr. gas check mould for a 1971 Win. Mod. 94
I've been shooting factory cast 170 gr. GC's .309 diameter through it so for with great results, but after reading posts here I'm wondering if I shouldn't go to a
.310 or .311. atleast to test. So I haven't purchased a sizer die as of yet. Anybody had some experiences with this era of 30-30? I would think that .310 would be a safe bet ????

I load for two 30/30's . Both seem to prefer .311, however if your's works well without leading @ .309 that's what I'd start with. By the way , I'd measure one of those bullets before ordering a sizer. Might be larger. I usually start 30 cal's @ .310. :Fire:

I have a similar rifle for a lot of years and I use that same boolit sized to .312" and it gives me great results. It normally shoots well below 2 moa out to 200 yards and has won several cowboy matches for me in that time. I have also taken deer with it so it is one of my favorite rifles for these reasons. I have loaded a lot of different loads over the years using this bullet. From a light load of 8 gr of Red dot to a heavy load of 32 gr of H335. They all seam to work for the intended purpose.

I load for a model 94 Classic Rifle (vintage 1970) and a Marlin 336. Both shoot cast bullets exceptionally well. The 94 doesn't care if they are .308 or.309. That rifle has cut sub-1 inch groups at 100 yd from a rest, back when my eyesight was better. The Marlin prefers .309, and the groups are around 3 inches. The difference may be because the 94 has a 26 inch octagon barrel, and the Marlin is a standard 20 incher--more than the difference in rifling. I use 24.5 gr reloder 7 behind a Lyman 311041 bullet with a Hornaday gascheck. I haven't worked up a final load yet, but XMP5744 powder seems to show a lot of promise with cast bullets in these 30-30's, and in my Marlin 45-70 as well.

94's seem to like 170 grain boolits. I've been loading Lyman #311291 ( a round-nose version of what you are using) casting at 173 grains @ an as-cast diameter of .310. Shooting them as-cast with 27 grains of 3031 gave me good groups at 100 yards. Sizing them to .309 didn't make much of a difference in the size of the groups with the 27 grain loading but using 28, 29, and 30 grains with the .309's progressively tightened things up. Rifle is a serial # under 2.5 mil from the early 60's and its in pretty near new condition.

Oh boy did you come to the right place !

Do I ever have experience with the 311041 bullet, in 30-30 !
I cast them from air cooled ww, I use a lyman slip on gascheck, and I hand lube them with LBT blue.
I do not size, and they drop from the mould at .311 .

34.5 gr..... H-414 ( W-760 ? ) seated out to just touch the lands if I was single feeding, and in my old model 64 Winchester, with peep sights, I could get 1.5 in 3 shot groups at 100 yds, with slight vertical stringing.

I used to take that rifle to the gravel pit, and at long range, 100 to 200 yds, I could bust apples every time !

H414, I love this powder. It can push some boolits to the same speed as other powders but with much less pressure! It is THE powder for MY 30-30 and my 22-250 likes it too.

My marlin has a .310 bore and unless I use the .311 sizer to lube the barrel leads.
