The 2 swaged slugs in the center have been altered to bore riders. They can be seated out close to .250" further, then before.

These are slugs I swaged and reported on in a previous post. Without re-throating the rifle, the only way to seat a boolit out further is to reduce it's diameter so it will sit out further into the lands. All I did was to make a basic Lee type push though die, but with a step in it. I added an ejector punch down through the top.

In operation the die is adjusted up or down to reduce the nose diameter to whatever length is needed. Once pushed in, the base plunger in the ram is lowered and you place your hand under the die while with the other you push the ejector pin down and catch the altered slug.

Since the swage dies were made to produce a slug that was to be paper patched, the major OD of .374"+ is very close to the land diameter needed for the nose. In this case just a few tenths over .372", so the step is a bare thousandth tall inside the die.

The reduced nose now mikes .3721".

The body remains at .3745". The body ID of the new die was turned to .375". As these slugs were cast of basicly pure lead, from the swage die there was negligable spring back when ejected. Cores cast with a tiny amount of WW + tin will eject from the swage die at close to .375". Since I was also wanting to possibly create bore riders with those too, I had to fudge the body ID a tad.

However with these very soft slugs and the very tiny amount of work they required to push them past the step, the body didn't enlarge at all. The one other option, very much the same as this is to simply create a slug, paper patched or otherwise to end up at the bore diameter. They may be seated out to any desired OAL.

Nice job, am planning on making several Lee type sizing die's. Only have a foot of threaded drill rod and don't want to use it all up before I get to working up swaging and pointing dies. My lathe is hand turn feed so can't thread any thing.
Seems as if I blow my income on supplies, car and truck repairs, bills and don't have enough left over to buy a good lathe that's badly needed. May have to sell a few guns to finance it. Doubt that!
