Side of the barrel usually has the model name on D-frames.
What does it say?

It does not that I could see I think it is a colt 44-40 circa 1917

Since you have the year of make (derived from serial number?) and caliber (derived from barrel side-stamp?), it is almost certainly a New Service, given its front sight profile.

I agree it appears to be a New Service, but the gun and the date, (1917) don't fly. It has the first type narrow trigger guard, the newer type top strap, and I can't tell from the pictures if it has the Colt proof on the trigger guard, I'm thinking it was made 1906-1909. (Colt New Service Revolvers-Bob Murphy)

NEW SERVICE 44WCF. Should be stamped on the left side of the barrel, (if it's a 44/40) and "*Colt's* New Service" should be stamped in a circle around a rampant colt on the side plate.

I/G, I believe you are right, and I stand corrected. The bottom frame contouring isn't quite right. My Serven's guidebook is still buried in a box someplace, working from memory at my age is hazardous to your accuracy.

122588Here's my New Service, .45 Colt, 7.5" barrel made in 1904. An "old" model without a hammer block, has the narrow trigger guard, and long top strap, however the hammer, has the improved riveted pivoting firing pin. Click the photo and you can read the "NEW SERVICE 45 COLT." marking on the barrel, and "*COLT'S* NEW SERVICE" in a circle surrounding a rampant colt on the side plate. 12,800 serial number range.
