Hey, guys I picked up a Ruger blackhawk in 45 LC. I was wondering what was your favorite powder for this old standard. I will be shooting mostly 250gr ld cast bullets. What powder do you like for med loads/plinking & what powder for full tilt hunting loads. I wont bother anyone for charges, I can work that out, just wanting to know what everyone else was using. Also if you dont mind do you have a favorite brand/type of primer to set it off with. Thanks guys.

I think you will see the word "Unique" in first place with a tie between H110 and 2400.

Unique , HS-6 , 231

There are so many powders that work for the type of loads you want
It is sort of a toss up

Just try a few and find something you like

For plinkers. I use 6.5 grains of Red Dot under a 250 grain boolit.
For hunting, 18.5 grains of 2400 under the same boolit is awful hard to beat.

For full tilt loads, either jWord or cast, I use W296 (same as H110). High velocities and clean burning.

For plinkers, I use W231. Also very clean burning.

In 37 years of loading cast boolits in .45 Colt, I've never found a more accurate powder than Unique. For "Ruger only" loads, I use Bluedot.

Plinker= Unique, TiteGroup

All around= Bluedot, 2400....FWIW 60,000 will grenade a BH

231, Unique, and 2400 will do everything I want to do in 45 Colt. And about 90% of my other handgun calibers, too.

I am rapidly getting the number of powders down to two for all my reloading.

So far my favorite for the 45 Long Colt is black powder.

But, like brunettes and claret, not for everyone.

Good luck

I think the only thing I've ever shot from my Blackhawk is cast bullets powered by SR-7625 (gray label/can). It fills the case better than other powders.

I have .44 and .41 Magnums, so I've never made hot loads for the .45.

Stew

Gee, Am I the only guy that runs Bullseye in .45 Colt? 7.5 grs and 454424 is my standard fare, well except for 10 grs of Herco sometimes, and sure 2400, H110/W296 and sometimes H4227 for 300 grainers going fast, Oh and Lil'Gun, and sure Unique, I've shot lots of Unique, and Red Dot, Blue Dot, Power Pistol, Titegroup, and pretty much everything that burns faster than 4198 (although I might try that next).

I.m falling in love with trailboss for my 45 Ruger, But I use more Unique then any other powder for all my handguns. Titegroup in 3rd place when saving money loading target loads.

I also tend to like TightGroup as well. It has a wide range to load it for but be careful when loading to the full charge. As in watch for pressure signs. For fast stuff I also like the W296 and H110. H110 is a little cheaper than W296.

Unique, all lead bullets with medium to heavy crimp for uniformity. Unique fills the case appropriately enough that a visual inspection prior to bullet seating is easily accomplished.

I have and do use 700X, W-W 231 and recently some TiteGroup, all of which are pretty clean burning, but Unique is clean enough and offers good velocities from the low to high "fps". It's been my starting powder and mainstay for 35 years of reloadijng the Colt .45 SAA.

AS I recall 4.3 gr or so makes a decent load for my 1979 Ruger BH. Accurate, clean burning and mild recoil.

H-110 / ww296 same thing, different can either are my favroite for full tilt. ww-231 is my favroite for plinkers to the mid range level.

For a nice, pleasant load for my Vaquero in .45 Colt, I use 5.8 gr. of trailboss under a 250 gr. RNFP.

When I want some bark and flame, I've lately been using 23.6 gr. of H110 under a 250 gr. Hornady soft tipped jacketed hollow point. Using a magnum primer and a 250 gr. XTP, it's supposed to run about 1350 fps.

Have fun settin' the woods on fire!

For the .44 mag, my favorite powders are: Green Dot, 2400 and WC820.

From heavy target to mid-range loads I like Unique. I've tried many other gunpowders in .45 Colt, but always seem to go back to Unique as an old standard favorite.

For mid-range to moderately-heavy loads, I really like 2400. If I want something hotter than that, I grab another revolver/caliber.

I've used Win. LPs for all .45 Colt loads for decades. Recently, local supplies have been spotty and I've substituted CCI Lg. Pistol for my Unique and 2400 loads in .45 Colt with no change in velocity beyond standard deviation. I can't say that about changes with other calibers and powders.

Plinking loads: Unique
Heavy Loads: 2400
Thumper loads: H110

'Course, Unique will get you up to around 1000 fps pretty well with a 250gr. boolit, and that will drop anything in my neck of the woods. So, unless you got some truly bad critters to deal with, it might just be all you need!
