Thought I might throw this out here to all for some advice.
Have seen IMR 4831 used now and then , have been using 4064 in my 308 up to now and have been pleased so far with the results .
How does 4831 perform in .308 calibers , .. as in comparison to ?
(since I seem to also have a bit in supply for the moment) ...
Thanks

I think you will find that IMR-4831 and H-4831 may be a bit too slow burning for a 308 cartridge. I use it in several magnum calibers where it really shines. I prefer IMR-4895 or H-4895 for loading my son's 308 and my grandson's 7mm-08.

+1 what knifemaker said.

I use IMR-4831 in 7.62x54R which has a little more capacity than the .308 Win case. Even so and using a 174gr bullet you still can't get enough of it in the case to reach top end performance. For my use though, pushing the 174 to 2500 f/s it gets the job done.

The .308 Win is not very picky and can be loaded with many different powders. I'm sure if you check several data sources you will be able to match up with something suitable and in stock. Powder in general seems to be finally making it back onto store shelves.

BTW: The 174gr in this post is a jacketed bullet.

You didn't say what for. Jacket/lead, bullet wt. etc.

4831 is 2 so.

For jacketed bullets in the 150-180 range, RL15, 8208, CFE, Varget, BLC, H414, 4007SSC all work well. They also are good in .223s. There are others but maybe not used as much or do as well.

I shoot 165 - 175 with RL15 almost exclusively to include 1000yd F class rifle.

It may not be the optimum powder for a 308 but should work if you have a bunch to use up. I've used old WWII surplus 4831 someone gave me in 30 40 Krag for years. The 2 cartridges have about the same capacity. I use all I can get in the case and compress it behind a 180SP and it shoots good. As MOTOR said I don't think you can get enough in a 308 to get in trouble.

not a good powder for reduced loads. works great in magnum or maximum loads, though. i use it in a 7 mauser, 308 norma magnum and 8mauser, but all with jacketed. 4831 should not be loaded with reduced loads as it has been known to detonate with less than starting loads. try to use magnum primers with it.
