I bought my first Ruger today. I bought a Super Blackhawk 44 mag in stainless. I've never owned one before and I will admit it looks to be made quite stout. Looking forward to getting my hands on some 44 mag bass and making some good old hand loads. I will say the gun forced its way into my hand and at gun point I bought it. So, are they any good?

Hi,
That was my first pistol purchase a LONG time ago! Be careful! They kill on one end, and maim on the other!

Yes they shoot good built like a tank love 300gr boolits. Does it have the sq trigger guard or round they made both. Mine is the 10'' barreled sq guard it bites your knuckles.

The SBH is no good, you should send it to me to go with this.
Got to find me some nice grips. Yep, 300 gr boolit is what mine likes as well.

I have an early Ruger Super Blackhawk that is crazy accurate. I mostly use the 250 gr Keith (early on the Lyman 429421 now the Mihec true copy of the H&G #503) ahead of 24.0 grs of H110. It chronographs at 1300 fps. Maximum is 25.0 grs for 1400 fps. I have taken all of my deer with the 24.0 gr load. As issued the recoil, even in the heavy Super, was hard on my hands and knuckle. I immediately bought a pair of Packmayr grips and NO MORE PAIN. I couldn't care less about the "beauty" of the grips - I am, after all, a PERFORMANCE guy:bigsmyl2:.

All Rugers I have seen need a trigger job. I have done some myself and have had a pistolsmith do some. All of them benefited from the improved trigger. Other than that, tens of thousands of heavy loads and no wear other than holster wear. These are GOOD revolvers. Definitely the best value on the market and "hell for strong"!

After trying the trigger I will have to agree. The trigger is very light and crisp on my S&W 25-5 and my S&W 686-6 The Ruger WILL be going to the shop for a trigger job before I put round #1 thru it.

Take lessons in putting that thing back together after a good cleaning. I .......argh hate putting them together.
Just take the grips off, and throw it in a bucket of solvent. I know there are others out there who will laugh at me, but them coil springs go everywhere!!!!

You've bought a fine gun that will last several lifetimes given proper care. Don't let the recoil bother you, just work up to it. Here in GA, anything that needs killin is easily accomplished by a 250gr Keith at 1000-1200fps. Sure you can put the hammer down on some elephant loads if that's your thing, but it isn't always necessary.

There won't be any full house loads in this gun. I will be looking for some decent grips.

Might want to read this:

before you shell out for that store bought trigger job. All my Rugers benefit from it. Costs nothing to try and reversible if you don't like it.

You're going to love this revolver. Yes, the recoil can be attention getting, but it really isn't bad if you work up to full power, and that is even if you need it. This can be a gentle plinker or enough gun to hunt anything in North America with, or anything in between, your choice. My SBH is a 5.5", and is very accurate with a variety of loads.

As has already been said, a Keith boolit at 1000 fps will do all you need it to do. Plus they are a LOT easier on the hands/wrists than the howitzer rounds.

My first handgun that I had to have my Dad buy was a New Model SBH in the mid-70's. Dirty Harry movies were a big influence back then. Still have it, just don't shoot it much any more but I should. When I finally downloaded the thing is when I found out I could actually hit something. Like others have stated, work up. 240 grain bullets in the 750-800 FPS range are so cheap and fun to shoot at paper or metal. 900-1000 FPS for 100 yard shooting should you be so inclined. You may find out that is 90% or more of your shooting requirements.

6bg6ga--post #12 by Airman Basic is well worth your time to read the article he referenced. I've performed this poor man's trigger job on countless Rugers for myself and friends. Really works well.

Decent grips have different meanings depending on what kind of shooting you are doing. I really hate the look of the big rubber monstrocities however my
7 1/2" 45 convertible wears them as they are much more comfortable to shoot with ruger only colt loads. There are some beautiful grips available for the Blackhawk, and there are some very functional grips for them, choose your poison.

Congrats on the purchase, I'm sure you will enjoy it for many years.
