Hey everyone, I've been busy all year and haven't gotten my deer season reloads started  I went ahead and ordered the bullets here (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/1988712697/cast-performance-bullets-45-caliber-459-diameter-420-grain-lead-flat-nose-gas-check?cm_vc=ProductFinding) since I won't have time to cast my own this fall. I swore I had seen a load using Varget in one of my manuals, but when everything came in, I didn't find a single load for 420 gr period in any of my manuals, including the Lyman Cast Handbook. I'm wondering if anybody has any data for this bullet with Varget in a Marlin 1895.

The Lyman Cast bullet handbook has a starting charge of Varget for the Lee 450 gr bullet at 43.2 grains (for Springfield type rifles). I'm thinking about starting there if no one has any info to share, would this be sound logic, that any load for the heavier bullet would also be safe for a lighter bullet if they are both lead and not a powder that shouldn't be reduced?

The rule of thumb is you can shoot a lighter boolit with the same charge as a heavier one within reason. You 420 will work just fine with the 450 data. It will likely shoot a little faster.

Thanks! I wasn't sure if 30 gr was considered too large a difference in bullet weight in 45-70 or not haha.

I use 40 grs 0f 3031 with a 415 gr boolit and 30 grs of 4198 w/ a tuft of Dacron w/ a 415 boolit in .45-70. These are safe in my gun only and should be worked up for others. It falls in around the top end of trapdoor loads. Hope it helps.

I've had great luck with H335, and there is lots of data available.

I use 42grains of 3031 and a 420gr without any Dacron in my '86 and use it as a mighty killer of elk! Never had one fail to exit or needed a second one. :drinks:
