Now here's some interesting things I found while surfing. Seems the US had higher priority uses for tin toward the end of the Great War other than using it in the core of bullets or in exploding shells. So, the fellows at the lead companies got busy. Here's a couple patents for such stuff. http://www.google.com/patents/US1360339 http://www.google.com.ar/patents/US1158672 Elsewhere, which I forgot to bookmark, I found some technical info on the lead/barium/calcium alloy, the name of which I can't remember. It was harder and performed better than genuine babbitt, though 99% lead! Reference was in a US 1917 metallurgist's journal which I'll link to if I manage to find my way back to it.
