I came across an older (pre-alliant)full 1 lb. container of this at a gun show fro cheap. I have found some data and it mirrors unique or .5 grain more for the same pressure/velocity. Anyone one here shooting it in standard pressure 45 Colt? I am down to less than 2 Lbs. unique and trying to conserve as I am using it in 30-30 and 45-70 as well. I am guessing it has the same position issues but maybe preforms about the same?

If you have the data for it then use it. Why the worrying? As you said it mirrors Unique. Generally a half grain more than Unique.
Have at it.

I used 9 grains of Herco with the Saeco 230-grain #954 bullet in my Colt New Service with 5-1/2" barrel and got 880 fps. 8.5 grains with the 255-grain #955 got 840 fps. Like the man said +0.5 grain over what you were using with Unique. 9 grains in the .44-40 with 200-grain bullet is a full charge load 1300 fps in the '92 Winchester.

I used Herco in mid to low pressure loads in the 44 Mag and Herco in high pressure 9mm and found it worked great in both. Never tried it in the 45 Colt but I'll bet it'll work great.

I began using Herco when I bought my Uberti 45 colt, a few years back.
My reasoning was that I wanted a powder that took up a lot of space in the 45 Colt case, and also had a medium burn rate.
The Herco burns great with my 250 to 260 grain cast boolits, There is very little unburned powder.
I load 9 grains of the Herco for the push under my boolits. That is all I want in the light spaghetti saa.

Jack

thanks guys, I see Alliant states 9.5 grains max with a lead 250 SWC so I will use 9.0 and lyman's 454190. Should work as well.

That should work fine for what you want.
Our of curiosity, what handgun/rifle are you loading your 45 Colt round for?

Be aware of differences in seating depth of the bullets you are substituting. Your planned reduction of charge is likely wise.

They're pretty close with Herco being a bit slower....from what I've read (I have no way to do pressure testing) Herco will give you a bit more velocity with the same pressure as Unique...as has been stated Herco requires a bit more powder to match Unique....for me Herco meters a bit better also.....I have one lb of Unique and 8lbs of Herco....so to sum it up....Herco will do anything Unique will do and IMO do it just a bit better....:bigsmyl2:

I use a LOT of Herco powder. It performs well in the 28 gauge shotgun with 3/4 oz loads, and does fine work as a mid-range Magnum revolver powder (950-1100 FPS, conventional weight SWCs). I've used between 9.0 and 10.0 grains of Herco in the 45 Colt to duplicate blackpowder era loads with #454190 or #454424 in the Ruger BisHawk. In its 7.5" barrel, 10.0 grains enables 950-975 FPS.

I am loading for all Colts. 4 or 5 Colt single actions/New frontier, New service and Anaconda.

++++++++++++ 1

Herco will do anything Unique will do and do it just a bit better! Herco is a big-time friend to PB Boolits! It's about all I use in .38, .357, .44 Special, .44 Mag, .45ACP, .45AR and .45 Colt for 30 years now.

Back before this shortage situation, the Unique shelf would be empty, guys would stand there and moan. Me, I would smile, quietly pick up a can of Herco from a well-stocked shelf and be very happy! ;)
