Second day of the ML elk season 0700 hours, one shot from the Remington 700, 50 cal ML, 380 grain cast conical, 100 grains FFG. She went straight down and never got up. Now the work begins.121348

LOTS of work...

I find that if you always shoot them uphill, near the road, that seems to work best...

Wow, that's a big ol' cow, congrats to the wife!

Didn't know there was such a thing as a Remington 700 muzzleloader in .50 cal., I have a 1980 vintage 700 in .30-06, it was my dad's elk rifle.

Very nice! I can't get mine to shoot but she'll help me butcher and put up red meat in a heartbeat!

Give her a big pat on the back for a job well done. Both of you are going to enjoy many meals off that elk this coming winter. Since she harvested it, does that mean you are going to cook the steaks for her?

Nice cow, there is a lot to eat there, and the cast don't tear up near as much as some super mag. JW

I didn't know Remington made one either until a few years ago. I don't know if they still make them but they are pretty neat.

Nice job! Better keep that wife happy, cause it's hard to outrun that muzzleloader!

I didn't draw a tag in my state this year. Sure do miss having elk meat to eat. Congrats and enjoy

What a nice job, unless my eyes deceive me there's a receiver sight on that gun.
Tell your wife I think that makes it all the more special by using iron sights.
Thanks

Oregon ML seasons are designated "primitive" i.e. iron sights, open ignition, no shotshell primers, loose powder, no sabots, lead bullets not more than 1 1/2 calibers long. In other words, the way it should be. Sorry guys, but scoped rifles using closed ignition, sabots and jacketed bullets are just slow to load single shot rifles and not in keeping with what we wanted in Oregon when we got our ML seasons many years ago.

The wife puts in for a ML elk tag every year as that is what she prefers, plus it's a hair tag, i.e. she can shoot one elk, any elk. I hunt general season most years, that allows us some time between seasons and having to butcher two elk is a lot of work that we prefer to spread out a couple of weeks if possible.
