I'm a new contender owner. I have only had it out once. 10" 30-30 barrel. Mid road jacketed loads.

What at is the best way to grip this thing without having the break open lever dig into your offhand?

Do you put your offhand under the grip?

Just curious what you guys do.

If you are shooting it from a standing position and using iron sights then use your off hand to grip the forearm. The "Gripper" Packmeyer or the Renite , both with finger grooves helps controlling the pistol. If you have an EER scope or some form of "red dot" style scope, then you might look at trying to grab the Bbl. and forearm.

Taco grip... hold the forearm and the grip. I shoot 223, 41 mag with 270gr. slugs and 10mm in it.

I always wear a glove on the shooting hand. First glove I owned wasn't very good, but I improved it by gluing some 1/8" thick flexible foam around the middle finger. You could say I gave the middle finger to the recoil.

Once had a 14" .357 Herrett, hated the thing. Only way I ever found to shoot the thing accurately other than from a bench was to grip my hiking staff with the left hand at a suitable spot, gun gripped with the right, and support the forend across the left hand. Worked well, didn't take me long to trade that hard kicking thing to someone else. GW

Oh, and if you get a heavy recoiling barrel - like 444 or 45-70 watch the screws holding the forearm on
as you can tear them in half.

Mine is in 7tcu. If on a bench, I use a rest, very front of grip on rest with off hand just behind on the grip. Standing, off hand on fore end, but I like to shoot modified creedmoore the best; laying on my back, left hand under head, gun saddled across lower calf of right leg. VERY stable, recoil barely affects you. Most accurate position I've found, but not always possible.

I do most of my shooting offhand with all of my Contender pistols (no scopes). Depending on the size of the cartridge I either just rest the forend on my off hand (much like a pool cue) for lighter recoiling calibers (32-20 or 222) or just lightly grip the forend for heavy recoilers. Everybody seems to have a different style so whatever works for you. My favorite rear handgrip is the wood grip that is flared at the bottom and has finger grooves but they are hard to come by and is like the one pictured by Artful above on the bipod.

Groo here
As a Handcanion shooter and taught by J D Jones [SSK]
As was told to me ,so I tell you.
Place the shooting hand on the grip as normal.
Place the first two fingers of the support hand OVER the trigger guard spur, the other finger on the
shooting hand as normal.
This the best way I and others have found to shoot heavy TC pistols. 375JDJ,411JDJ , 45-70 etc.]
Ps , I shot the 45-70 with the support hand fingers under the spur [once]
only took a week to heal!!!!

Shooting offhand with a contender is a tricky deal. Everybody comes up with something that works for them. I use the "taco" hold for most scoped barrels that aren't big kickers. Most of the time I try to have some sort of support if I'm hunting...I'm not a steady enough guy to make most shots otherwise.
