My 1st hunt with boolits in the .308.
Lee .312 160(170 lubed and gc'd), sized .311, 30 gr h4895, ave 2050 fps. Neck shot at just shy of 200 yds(laser). So far it looks like there was almost no expansion, but I know my lead is too hard, almost straight COWW.

Congrats!

Looks like hunt was a total success to me whether the alloy was too hard or not.

samwithacolt, don't need much expansion with those neck shots. Good job. JW

Too right! A hit in the CNS with Tungsten Carbide would do the same.
Good shootin' Sam. :)

Congrats! You could also try one of the NOE 311-165 grain Ranch Dog bullets in your 308 for better expansion.

Great deer and good shooting!

I have had good luck in the thirty calibers using soft pointed cast boolits, have taken several deer with the 7.62x39 using soft points and found them to be about the perfect hunting cast boolits. I have written about using them on here before and if you search for my previous posts you will find some reading on the subject.

Congrats on your deer.

+1, It worked. Next time you cast try a mix of 50/50 WW's & pure or range scrap to soften them up if you want more expansion. Read this: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?172689-I-believe-the-cast-lead-rifle-boolit-is-the-most-effective-projectile-in-the-world. The first few pages are well done by goodsteel and he's got lots of years of experience doing this casting thing. ;-)

I had real good luck with a hard alloy in .35 cal. It did not expand, but with a good meplat just left a 3/4" hole from side to side and they bled out real quick. However, the range in brush/jungle country in Arkansas is much shorter than it looks like you have from your picture.

Congrats, Samwithacolt, fresh venison is always good. Whatever you're doing to load cast boolits is working, keep it up.

Congrats and I agree with the others that expansion is nice but location will always be the key to success.

Awesome & Congrats on that fine animal. I'm shooting the Lee 200gr GC from my .308 as well and it went clean thru the cow moose I shot a month ago. Very little expansion but she's in my freezer so thats gotta say something.
Good Job & Good Eats!!

Wow, I was getting usable groups from the 180 gr lee .312(sized .311), but the 165 shot better and I was running out of time. I have a lyman 200 gr .314 mold, never thought to try it in the .308.
