Says 100% pure medical grade, looking for a local source of the stuff and this came up in a search :

http://www.lansinoh.com/index.php?src=directory&view=Products&srctype=display&back=Products&id=19&category=Topical+Treatments&***=0,10,1

Sounds pure, doesn't say anything about water or other stuff added

Or, does anyone know of a commonly available source without ordering online, or using something that isn't ideally suitable ?

Thanks

Anhydrous literally means 'without water'. The lanolin with water added is called 'hydrous lanolin'. Lanolin is grease from the hair of sheep.

I wouldn't buy it that way. How much do you want? If you only need a few ounces check around on Google to see if you can find a chemical company that'll send you a sample of technical grade. Or, check soap making or tannery suppliers. You don't need pharmaceutical grade unless you want to make cosmetics for sale to the public. If you get frustrated, PM me and I'll check the frig in the garage... I may have a couple pounds in reserve that will probably last longer than I will. What I have is pure technical grade anhydrous lanolin.

Works great as case lube, and works in Ed's Red. Far as I can tell, it's straight lanolin that has been whipped to make a cream. I used a house brand breast cream, though.

Another supplier of lanolin and other useful stuff is www.thesage.com.

I recently bought a 3 oz. tube of it at the local K-Mart Pharmacy (gotta ask the pharmasicist for it )for about $3, enough to make a triple batch of felix lube and have about a tablespoon left over.

O'Gormans trapping supply out of Broadus MT had it in their catalog a few years ago. Check trapping supply houses near where you live or google their phone #. Gianni

Google anhydrous lanolin; you DO NOT need medical grade for any of our purposes. Medical grade is much more expensive than plain vanilla lanolin.

Here is where I get my lanolin:

http://www.thesage.com/catalog/FixedOil.html

Just scroll on down the page. $8.75 per lb in one pound lots and much cheaper in quantity.

Try your local friendly vet. I did and got most of the ingredients for Felix lube for less than available at a pharmacy. I think the anhydrous lanolin cost me about AU$20.00 for a litre (2.2 pints) It is made for animal husbandry/vets and does the job as well as anything.

I may be out of line here but.... Wouldn't "bag balm" from the farm supply do the same thing for about 8 bucks for a big container of it?

Wikipedia had this to say on the composition:

"The active ingredients of Bag Balm are 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate 0.3% (antiseptic) in a petrolatum and lanolin base.

Bag Balm used to contain 0.005 mercury `from ethylated sterols`."

Will any of this adversely affect the lube?

Ha ha ha!! As Felix would say " Try it and report back to use how it works"
FWFL&BB....Keeps your hands soft while lubeing. And if your bag is callous, rub some on her too!! LOL!!
Hopefully it would't soften your boolits!!
OK Got that out of my system.

I have actually used bag balm in a lube...acts just like smelly vaseline, none better, none worse.

That's 'cause it is.

Vaseline is cheap; lanolin is expensive. They ain't gonna put any more lanolin in that stuff than they need to.

Exactly...I had a bunch left over from my days of jerkin tit in the Michigan weather, I would say the lanolin content is darn near nonexistant. It does have enough stinkum in it to destroy domestic tranquility when melted in the house though. [smilie=1:
