I have been casting some boolits in my new mold from Ranch Dog for my Marlin. I am looking for a good starting point with IMR 4198 and the Ranch Dog TLC460-350-RF. Most of the loads that I have found have been for a jacketed slug. Thanks in advance :-D

Don't know about IMR4198 !

All I've used with either of the Ranch Dog 45 caliber bullets was XMP5744 .

This may be of some help !

In Lyman's Cast bullet Handbook the closest weight they show to the RD 350 is the 330 grain HP bullet which happens to be a plain base . Anyway they show IMR4198 starting at 33.5 grains and the max at 43.0 grains .

If it were me I think I would start at about 37 or 38 grains and go up from there in 1 grain increments .

In the lower charges they say use a 1/2 grain dacron wad over the powder . They also said use that in all loads of SR4759 , but I never did and they shot just fine .

Again with the IMR4198 they say use the dacron in the lesser charges , but with the max load they do not suggest using it , so I would think halfway in between you could by their recomendations quit using the dacron and that matter of fact would be about 38 grains .

Hope this helps :-D

I should have looked a little closer at Ranch Dogs web site. He has his data for H4198 and I have looked at allot of other loads and IMR uses the same charges minus a couple grains as Hodgdon.

I look at the balistics associated with Varget and it looks so cast friendly.
I think any one of these loads ought to take down a 150 lb white tail.

..................My favorite load in the 45-70 with a 405gr slug is 28.0grs of any 4198, or Nobel Tubal 2000.

Ranch Dog's data is irrefutable.

I've been using 25 grains of 4198 with 305 - 360 grain cast bullets for many years with no filler as a plinking and CAS load with MOA accuracy. 35 grains is still an easy load to work with but any more than 45 grains is above my comfort level.

Hey guys thanks for the interest in my molds and the data I've shot. Please allow me to post a couple of items being the chart above was posted. If you go to the opening data page (http://www.ranchdogmolds.com/TLC460350RF/4570Data/) all the appropriate powders are listed with information about each. There is legend and other comments. On each data page there is a set of conditions for the data.

The legend...

...and then my explaination and disclaimer...
This page is my personal web page where I store reloading data that I've collected with my firearms and components. Use of this information is at your own risk.

The 45-70 Govt.'s SAAMI Maximum pressure is 28.0K PSI. I elect to reload my 1895G to the same pressures I load other Marlin actions to, 42.0K PSI. 42.0K is the SAAMI Maximum for the 30-30 Win and 444 Marlin.

I also make some recommendations based on all this shooting

I like the 425 grainer better then the 350 grainer myself [smilie=1:

But be prepared the 425'er hits you a pretty good lick when you set her off

Most likely with the XLR scoped and the pad it shouldn't thump you as much as my LIGHT 1895CB .

My 1895XLR with a Leupold 3-9 scope and shooting the Hornady Leverevolution is not bad recoil wise at all !

But the unscoped 1895CB and my old 1978 vintage Marlin 1895 with cast bullets are stout when you set them off .
