How long is a Remington 700 short action magazine box and would it be possible to lengthen them without compromising action strength?

There is no strength in the magazine box, per se.

When the old time gunsmiths opened up M98 actions for the "Short Magnums" circa 1960 they milled the feed ramp forward. Forward of the feed ramp is the lower locking lug.

It looks like Brownells has extended magazine boxes that'll give a 700 short action another .2":

Anyone ever installed one of these?

Um.... why don't you just find a long action? It shouldn't be difficult to find someone who'll trade you for a short action.

The measured length of the mag box on a Rem SA is about 2.840". Not recommended to lengthen forward because of the already mentioned bolt lug recess just forward of the ramp.... where part of the ramp would have to be cut out to lengthen the magazine box. But, I'm sure it's been done??? There is a smidgen extra length to the rear (comfortably about .10-.20") but will either require milling out the mag box cut out in that part of the receiver or installing a modified mag box that is cut out to fit that part of the receiver. Never have done it on a Rem so don't know what the after market longer box looks like. Additionally, if lengthening to the rear, the bolt stop will have to be modified so the bolt will travel farther rearward to pick up the next round in the magazine.

Have done it on a Winchester 70 standard length action. But that is a different animal.

Thanks .405. That makes perfect sense and agrees with Brownells description of the extended magazine box. IMHO, it's not worth the effort.

nicholst55,

The action in question would be for the .350 Remington.
