View Full Version : Case filler, is it needed?

I am about to start loading up some 45-70 405gr cast (hopefully this week if I can get off my behind and get some casting done) and it occurred to me I usually use black powder, or trail boss (not interchangeably) which fill (or mostly in the case of trail boss) the cases. This time I will be using either 3031, 4198, or 4895. All three of which SHOULD be leaving a bit of room in the case according to published data in my lee reloading manual. I know opinions vary, but I am open to the discussion about case filler. Should I use it? And if so what filler do you recommend?

Thanks

While i don't use a 405 grain bullet,i use a 325+-.

When i tested IMR-3031 i did not feel the need for any filler, same with 4198.

If the load density is 80% or less with any of those powders (3031, 4198, or 4895) in the 45-70 (OP doesn't say what level (there are 3) he is loading to) then I suggest a Dacron filler.

Fire a few test round and check the accuracy with a filler and without a filler.I get better results for the most part when using a filler.

Do some testing and see what your rifle says.

My Marlin 1895 gives lower SD with a Filler using 2400 but I frequently don't use one. Why not? It isn't a big enough difference on paper at 100 yards to warrant the extra step.

Sounds like a winner. I planned to cast some today, but it is STILL raining outside at 3 AM so that is probably out.

Tho I use only cast now, I had loaded store bought 405s with and without filler.
The solid packed rounds shot tighter groups, I fill everyone

I cast and reload 405 gr. in 45-70 using IMR4198 and don't use a filler. Shoots good enough for me.
I've always been leary of using the dacron filler.

I use 15gr of 700X in my 577-450, and use 2 square's of toilet paper for my filler.

Needed, IMO no, but it may improve accuracy.

I think it depends on exactly which powder your using and how much.
A little bit of filler may open the door to powders you wouldn't use otherwise.
Like IMR 4350 that likes the case full or it can be position sensitive and might have SEE events.
Or you may find it helpful when using reduced loads in something like a Mosin Nagant. (IMR 4895, max is around 55, running around 28, for my shoulders sake)

Needed, no probably not. But helpful at times, I'm a believer.
