:-| Do the octagon barrels require a special hand guard? I have a new to me 10" octagon .22LR barrel on the way. My other barrel is a 10" round. I'm hoping the same hand guard will work.

I "may" have one, not sure but I'll be happy to check the shop in the morning. I have several Contender fore ends and if there is one there it's yours.

I have a box with several fore ends, I think there is one for the octagon barrel, haven't even looked at them in years.

Yes, you will be in my debt. My Great Grand Daughter was born in Springfield two days ago, your job is to keep the boys away until she's 25.

Well that sounds like a deal! Congrats on the new addition to the family.

It does require a different forearm... mine cracked last week and I am going to try and salvage it... they used to be all over gun shows used, but they are not so common any more. I love they way the old octo barrels look, a little character!

Yes it is a special handguard and one of two ways of attaching it.

That said, I hope yours is like mine . . .

ACCURATE with all, most ammo and silly accurate with an ammo that is 100% irreplaceable.

I did have the 70's era 10" fore end but it is for the round bull barrel, not the octagon. Sorry.

That is great fun but only with full house H-110 300 gr bullet loads. [smilie=s:

Octogon barrels need a octogon forends. Round barrels use a semi round forend.
I have a 44 mag bull barrel and the first time with some full power loads, I got a blister on my hand after about a half a box.
For real fun, fire up the 375 Win barrel or 357 Herrett barrels. For a relaxing time, the 32-20 barrel is smooth shooting with hardly notice the recoil.
Check Evilbay, lots of TC stuff on there.

I had a super 14 44 mag that Gary Reeder in Flagstaff rechambered to 444 Marlin. Real fun to shoot with 310gr Boolits at 1,900 fps. Just make sure you keep your head out of the way of the barrel.

leadman, you need to step it up to a 45-70 barrel :veryconfu

I have a 444 barrel rechambered from a 44 magnum barrel.
I have also shot a 45-70 barreled Tender with out a muzzle brake.
The 444 with a 320 gr boolit seemed to have more recoil with a heavy load, read 48 gr 4895, than a Trapdoor load in a 45-70 with 385 gr boolits.
Recoil with either is not nice. BTW, I am not recoil shy....dale

That 10" 30-30 barrel was enough "fun" with upper end j words. Reduced cast from now on I think.
The octagon .22LR barrel should be a hoot!
I was able to buy the proper forend from a member here on the swap&sell page.

the trick is to let your wife see you take it out of the safe not put it in :bigsmyl2:

Two things I remember from the old days with Octagon barrels . . .

One fine morning a new gent arrives at the range and unrolls a set of barrels and a frame and barrel.
It seems he had just bought/traded into that set.

He unlimbered the trusty 30-30 octagon barreled TC and proceeded to fire

ONE shot

Rolled up his TC set and drove off.

The last 5 I shot out of my 10 octagon HotShot barrel had me worried that I would flinch and kill my chronograph after the first round. I got all 5 downrange and never used that load again though it was less than Max in the Lyman #3 Cast Boolit Manual.

I had doubts about possible accuracy of the octagon barrel, but my 22 LR octagon is minute of squirrel at 50 yards with all ammo I have shot and far . . .FAR more accurate with the previously mentioned irreplaceable 22 ammo
