View Full Version : Ammo Tray Boxes from Cereal Boxes
There are usually plenty of empty ammo trays at the range, but the boxes tend to be torn up or missing.
Cereal boxes are pretty much the same material.
I took apart an old box, and traced it out on a cereal box.

A little hot glue on the edge.

Easy peasy, and free replacement box. There was enough for two boxes there.

:bigsmyl2: ya should have left the box right side out.
Good job, thanks for sharing.

LOL thanks. I figure there are enough guys here that reuse factory ammo trays for reloads, that being able to make up new boxes would be handy.

Here is a quick pic of my efforts from a few years back. I still make a couple from time to time as the mood hits me:

You know..... You could do a cutout in a piece of thin plywood for a pattern so it is repeatable and lasts longer than tracing the original cardboard one. You could also tack a band of sharpened steel around the perimimiter and then put a backing board to make a stamp. From then on in only a few seconds with a hammer and a scrap of wood you could cut duplicates (or use it as an ink stamp and cut it out manually). Just depends on how many you will eventually make.

Will using the box from "The Breakfast of Champions" help your scores?
I could do that, but it only takes about 5 min to cut out a box. It would be an interesting experiment though.

On the subject: I reload 22LR primed empty cases with black powder ...
* Take a smokeless ammo box, turn it inside out and hot glue the flap
* Paste on a label of an 1897 UMC Match bullet (had a custom mold made of it) with the powder charge of the reload on the box

PS - have since shortened the COL down to 0.987 of the rounds so they will feed in a lever action too instead of just in my old Ballards and Stevens 44 and 44 1/2

A great thread and an easy "fix" for coming up with ammo boxes! Thanks for sharing!

The local police training officer should be contacted & a request for empty boxes be made. They become trash after one use. I even had him open the cases carefully for future use. Turned them inside out for my labels.

Jon,
What a GREAT idea! Thank You!
Our local indoor range lets you pick up empty factory, but most have torn flaps.
I will now be picking through the box of "ammo boxes" for orphaned plastic inserts and make boxes as outlined here.

Man, I just buy the white boxes from Midway. They last for years. I ain't got the time or patience to make the stupid things, and I use way too many.

I use empty oatmeal cans for ammo storage and cast bullets. The cardboard tubes cut easily in my chop saw to whatever depth is ideal. Re-use the plastic snap-in lid. I prefer Safeway brand over Quaker Oats, for what it's worth. They stack easily on top of each other on the shelf too.
