any thoughts on the pietta SAA in 44-40. I've read some about the cylender throat v/s the bore size on 44-40 6 guns. .427 cyl- .431 bore is this a problem with the pietta .

I do not have a pietta, but I have four guns from three different manufacturers versions all in the 44-40. All are new manufacture and all have .44 Magnum barrels. In other words, way oversized. They also have other problems. The Rugers were the worst with tight chambers, undersized cylinder throats, and oversized barrels. Ruger said it was "within tolerances". I had to get a gunsmith to sort it out.

I will never buy another 44-40. I have since replaced them with 38-40's and every one of them was built right. There is no other "more popular" caliber near the 38-40's size (at least for revolver cartridges) that tempts the manufacturer to fudge with wrong size parts.
