A friend made me a couple of ingot molds for my WW alloy out of a type of old square tubing material. They turned out about 2 feet long by 2 inches wide by 1 inch deep. He used a grinder to smooth out some areas and the grinder left the usual rough spots on an otherwise, pretty smooth surface. Other than the old "smoke it with a candle" deal, what other type release aids could I use to insure I don't permanantly fill one of these home made molds?

If they are truly square sided, it may be hard to get them to release no matter what, as all ingot moulds are tapered, being bigger at the top. I wouldn't fill both until you see it they will release at all. I believe Midway sells a spray product called drop out that might help.

Thanks guys. Hadn't considered any of that. Looks like a change to angle is called for.

Just drive a wedge of some kind between the walls to spread them open a little, 1°-2° on one side or both is all that is needed to get the ingots to fall out.
Be sure the welded ends ard angled out at the top also
Use a hand grinder to bevel the top edges a little will help.

Huh, I would have cast them full and then been here with a silly look on my face, asking how to undo what I have did! :) Someone is smarter than I, asking first!

I would think a little Rust would help to.

I know it helps mine

....and just how do you reckon I learned to ask first?

Cool,

I'm very new to casting my own and I'll have to remember that one.

Back to the original release agent question just set them out in the back yard for a week or two and let them get some surface rust on them.
