I'd picked up about 100 of these hulls at the local range thinking they might make a good candidate for the Lyman slug mould I'd acquired awhile back. I've loaded rifle/revolver for 40 plus years but have not attempted shotshells. I have read thru the posts on this slug and can't seem to find loading data for this hull. Is there some data available for this slug/hull combination?

Also wondering is there some way of identifying the empty hulls as to type? In reading thru the posts concerning the Lyman slug; many different hull/load combos are mentioned; but as someone who is not familiar with all the different shell manufacturers and the different hulls each one makes, I feel a little bit lost. Is there a location where the different hulls are shown and the differences explained?

thanks, David

Does the inside of the Hull have a plastic basewad or is it a unibody hull?

I don't think Remington has ever made buckshot loads in STS-style hulls, so these would have to be "Remington Plastic Cases with 1/4" Plastic Basewad" as mentioned on p 384 of the Lyman Manual 5th ed. The best way to make sure is to cut one in half (I like a band saw for this.) If you don't have Lyman Shotshell Reloading Manual, that would be good to get---it has lots of loads for Lyman slugs (and only Lyman slugs.) What kind of powder do you have available?

These hulls have a yellow plastic basewad and a six point crimp. I take it a unibody hull consists of a basewad and hull walls of the same material?

As far as powders, about the only ones I have which are suitable are Blue Dot and (possibly) Unique.

Am I barking up the wrong tree trying to use these hulls? I just assumed they would be suitable and even desirable as a hull for the slug load. I realize there may not be a tested load for these if they are not a commonly used hull.

I can only speak to the Longshot and 800x loads.....not saying they're not safe but wear a mouthpiece and don't wear glasses! Would suggest a couple grains lower to start, but the hulls are fine. Those high brass are sometimes a pain to size though.

I have shot hunderds of the Blue Dot loads at 45gr. thru a Remington 870 and a Mossberg 500 and they are a handful, recoil is bad

Thanks for the information! I will be looking for the Winchester wad and the primers to try and duplicate this load. I intend to try it in a Rem 1100 with hasting barrel and also a Savage 725. I kinda figured the recoil would be rough.

This makes no sense to me.... I have Winchester AA hulls and Winchester WAA12 wads, but I have 800x and Universal, so does this mean that I cant use this combination with the Lyman Slug? Why does it matter what wad you use with the slug with the different powders?

Maybe I bit off more then I could chew on loading 12 gauge.... It does make sense like regular rifle or pistol reloading

Doc.

Like you, I was a bit confused when I started to reload shotgun shells. The Lyman Shotshell Handbook warned against swapping components, but while I could easily understand why changing from a mild to a hot primer could cause trouble, it was not that obvious why substituting a compression plastic wad with two felt wads could drastically raise pressure - the overall weight of the load and the length of the finished shell being the same!

Only later on did it dawn on me that the really important variable which controls the pressure in a shotshell - especially with fast powders - is the volume of the "true combustion chamber" that is: the volume behind the wad after it has been compressed to its fullest, but before the payload has started moving. This is where the pressure is at its peak and since this volume will vary depending on wad (felt/plastic - compression/ non compression) or hull (compression formed/straight wall - high or low internal base) we end up playing the SWAG game - which is alright as long as one are aware of what he's doing and knows the implications of it. But for the casual shotshell reloader I highly recommend sticking to the manuals.

For these slugs I use the Remington STS 2 3/4" hull with the Claybuster knockoff of a WAA12 wad pushed with SR7625 and it works okay outta my doubles . Bear in mind these are not souped up loads as I shoot them in a couple Damascus guns as well !

Hey Doc:
The wads have to be compatible with the hulls and slugs. Some wads are designed for "straight" wall hulls. Some for "tapered" wall hulls. The petals of different wads are different in thickness. You have to use a wad that has the proper petal thickness x2
plus the slug diameter to fit properly in the hull.
You must start by using the proper design wad for your particular hull.

Jack
