What do you use, if anything, between smokeless powder & GC boolits?

Nothing needed between them. There's no difference between the 45-70 and the 35 Whelen in that aspect. But, I don't use smokeless in the 45-70.

So, since you shoot BP or a substitute, what do you use between the powder & boolit for that?

Either a .030" or .060" Walter's wad(small piece of vegetable cardboard) over the powder and lightly compress if needed and then seat the bullet on top of the wad as not to deform the soft bullet base. Bullets are cast 1:20 tin to lead.

This is what they look like.

I use .060 rubber fiber gasket material from Napa. I use this in 45-70, 45-90, and 40-65. I cut my own with a wad punch sized to fit snugly in the case. In my loads that use a grease cookie under the bullet ( Paper Patched bullets) Its a rubber fiber wad over the powder grease cookie and a playing card wad between cookie and bullet base. Many things can be used for wads tablet backing, milk cartons, gasket materials, felt, wax paper, poster board card board, some use the plastic coffee can lids even. One purpose of the wad is to protect the base of the bullet another is to keep lube or crud from sticking to it.
