BP wad lube doesn't require a lot of thought or ingredients. Generally, olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, or white Crisco + beeswax will work fine. Use more beeswax to prevent the lube from melting in warmer/hot weather.

Gatofeo #1. Lubes great and doesn't run and contaminate your powder in revolvers.

Mutton tallow, beeswax, and gulf wax. I'm thinking 2 parts of each wax and one part tallow, but I need to look it up if anybody is interested.

I get sheep fat from the butcher and render it into tallow in a crock pot outdoors (smells pretty bad) but you can buy it already done from Dixie Gun Works.

I had OhioRamrod over at the muzzleloading forum make me custom punches. The .44/.45 are .480. I like them .032 over chamber diameter for a tight fit.

The Army's mix in 1861 was 8 Parts Beeswax and 1 Part Mutton Tallow. In 1851 it was 1 Part Beeswax and 3 Parts Mutton Tallow.

We use 5 parts Mutton Tallow, 4 parts Beeswax and 1 part Olive Oil. When it runs out I will try the old Army formulas above. It works fine though for lubing wads and conicals.

I have deer fat that I need to reduce to tallow. Is that close to mutton? What makes mutton tallow so desirable?

I think the main thing is it doesn't go rancid out at room temps. Not sure what other benefit it has.
