Learned Sirs and Ma'ams,
What is the fastest burning/most reliable/stable burning 410bore powder you have pressure tested data for in 3" case w 11/16oz (300gr) load?

I am still working on my 410 pet load, but w296 is not doingnit for me- too low pressure and in my particular case i cant load any heavier shot weight, no stable burn.

i haave only a few loa dmanuals, and the fastest w 11/16oz is HS-6.

Any recommendations appreciated!

I wasn't impressed with 296 either. Could only get about 850 FPS in the 3 in. 11/16 load. Powder in hard to find here. I been using Accurate #9. Very little data out there but it works for me. If you look at a burn chart #9 is very close to 2400. If I could find some 2400 I'd try it. I been shooting 3/4 oz/327 gr. of 5's on squirrel this year. Been having a good time with the Stevens model 67 I picked up. Hope other people join in on this. I'm new to loading the 410 also.

Thanks Guys (or Gals, if you are).
Where does 300MP fit in the burn rate chart?
The chart i am looking at, from Handloader issue 275 shows 410 powders like this:
Fastest:
Sr-4756> HS-6> Blue Dot> Longshot> Alliant 410> 2400> Steel> Lil'Gun> H110>w296> 4227's

with the ones from Lil'Gun onward right on top of one another. 300MP isnt on my chart.

Unfortunately, i dont have any 4756.

Have you considered the 1/2 once loads for the 3 inch shell?

Very new to reloading the 410 and I've found, at least on the trap field, the 1100 FPS of the 3 inch 11/16 oz load a little slow for leads and such.

Looking through my old Lyman number 2 shotshell book I find a bunch of 1/2 oz 3 inch loads running from 1200 to 1500 FPS.

Not sure I want a 1500 FPS load, might have pattern "holes" but sure wouldn't mind bumping velocity a little to reduce lead on target.

on the hunt right now for a loader and some 4198 which was the go to powder for all the 3 inch loads listed in the Lyman book, then I'll do some patterning and see whats up.

BY the way just picked up a new ATI cavalry 410 O/U with screw in chokes, what a dream! currently running full and improved Mod. in the barrels but that may change as I develop a load for this puppy!

what i really wish was someone had developed a pressure tested load in 410 w Unique!

Thx for the reply. the 2.5" hulls dont hold the number of buckshot balls i am working on.

i know i didnt say what i was up to, though it is in an old thread here, but its a specialized 410 buckshot load. So right now its 3" hulsl only, and the payload weight (300gr or 11/16oz) is not changeable for now.

This is all in development of ocurse, so I may have to scrap the above restrictions. but for now, i just need a stable and reliable ignition and burn beyond what w296/h110 can do.

Maybe black powder?

looks like its the same as h110. A bit too slow for what (I think) I am after.

Lil Gun would be better suited for your needs.

what large straight rifle case has s similar internal volume as a 410 3"? when loaded similarly, i.e. shot down into the hull gives saller effective combustion volume? 444 marlin maybe?

If i can find a 444 marlin or similar cartridge w a 300gr bullet using Unique annd is under 12Kpsi, maybe i have something to experiment with...

Mike

p.s. if you get too fast the lead balls will compress, deform and form a blocking
barrier in the leade and barrel, be VERY careful as pressures will skyrocket

Fun reading and 1600 fps, WOW
