Hi,

I am thinking about getting into cast bullets. Unfortunately, i have not found any good information about the theories in the composition of lead casting. In particular, the purpose of additives used to mix with the lead. Can someone please explain the purpose of these different additives.

There is a link at the bottom of the page to LASC's cast bullet notes, This article from that page should help you out.

Have you read this? Or perhaps one of the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbooks, 3rd or 4th edition? Your questions should all be answered if you have read these references. Good to see someone willing to learn.

When I started casting, someone bought a kit for me that included a melting pot, some lubes, and, most importantly, this book:

Get that book and read it and then re-read it. You may move past some of the stuff in it over time - their alloy recommendations don't have to be followed strictly if you size correctly - but it's an invaluable resource. I still read portions of mine from time to time, and use the load data all the time.

....When getting into casting...you MUST own a copy of Lyman Cast bullet Handbook. Has a lot of info on alloys and crystal structure, in most cases much more info than you really need but there in case you want to study.

The Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook #4 is the "new" in print edition, it has 320 pages. The older , third edition, has 416 pages , and a lot of information was not included to make room for new powders, boolits and cartridges....it is not a bad idea to get the third edition if you can find one, especially if new to the game. It is still my first go-to reference, edition #4 is my second go-to. No such thing as having too much information.
