Have read the horror stories Big bores/small boolits

What is the biggest boolit anyone has been able to chamber in a Uberti 38-55 hiwall (Dia.)

Has anyone been able to chamber a .383 boolit with Starline long brass?

Barrel seems to slug .374/.382

Biggest I have (Ideal 375248) casts @ .380-.381

May try to Beagle it, but I don't have a sizer that large to make it round. (once again time is the issue)

Haven't had time to do a chamber cast or impression yet, hope to get to it soon.

Just wondering?

THANKS

I have a Uberti 1885 in 38-55 with a .382 groove diameter. My most successful bullet has been Lyman 375449 (.377 as cast) paper patched to .382. This will chamber in starline long brass.

Saeco offers a tapered mold (571) for the 38-55 that runs .383/.3835 on the base band.

Bullshop offers a 38-55 bullet that runs .384 on the base band.

We have one design in inventory that we had specially cut for the Uberty rifles. It drops a .384" boolit but at the moment I cant remember the weight.
OOPS after I typed this I see that ktw already informed on this, Thanks ktw

I did see this boolit in past posts.

Is this something that is available for purchase (boolits and/or mold)

If so, how do I get some to test with?

Let me know

Stop worrying about the biggest bullet diameter until you slug the rifle bore ... then shoot smokeless 0.001 over groove diameter and 0.002 for black powder

Barrel slugs .374/.382 as posted

Looking to shoot black, therefore the question about loading and chambering a .383 or .384 boolit

Enlighten me

How do I see what you have to offer?

Didn't find you in the vendors section.

I've used Bullplate in the past (got with NOE mold)

Thought you had stopped selling

Is there somewhere I can see Products and pricing?

Please advise

When I had a Uberti .38/55, the largest boolit that I had was .382" and fed easily, but was not accurate,. it needed a larger bullet, instead I sold the rifle.

Because of our fear of our ruling elite we have taken down our web site and no longer have any advertising of what we have or do.
All I can do at this time is suggest designs from our mold inventory if you let me know what your wants/needs are.
We are plugging along quite steadily with repeat customers and word of mouth so further advertising is not needed. If you are willing to work within those guidelines just PM me your needs.

I recently helped with the slugging and pound casting of an original High Wall with some wear in the tube and it looks like it starts about .383 in the back and tapers to .382 at the muzzle. The casts went off to LBT for mold creation with notes stating our best guess that .384 is where the slugs want to be and allowing Veral to do the rest. I tend to think that he and Tom at Accurate are going to be your go-to choices for this issue in the event your barrel needs something big.

...........There was a group buy done here on the board several years ago in Lee 6 cavity blocks that was aimed at the old 38-55's that had grooves running larger then .382". As KTW mentioned, the 3 Saeco tapered designs 225gr, 255gr and 300gr all run at .382" on the wide base band. The Lee GB ran .384" for it's length of drive bands. It had 3 crimp grooves, 2 lube grooves and took a GC.

My Uberti Hi-Wall in 38-55 has a .373" bore & a .380" groove. However the chamber will accept a .381" slug when used in Starline 2.125" brass. If you have, or can lay hands on a 40 cal cast slug (.405 - .410" Od and the longer the better) you can drive it into the chamber and get a good look at exactly what you're dealing with so far as what will, and what won't chamber.

A paper patched swaged 292grs HP patched to .381" chambered and extracted from my Uberti. You can see the engraving on the nose of the slug. Can barely see it in the photo but the lands reach down maybe .080" below the leading edge of the patch.

Just went through this with a friend who has an original Hi-Wall action with a tightly chambered barrel labeled 38-55. IIRC thebarrel was a Marquardt, but I don't recall who he said did the work. His groove IS .380" but with his short W-W cases (2.080") headstamped 38-55 cases he cannot chamber a round with a .381" cast slug. This is due to the thick case walls at the neck. He CAN chamber that same slug using the thinner Starline brass, and have release room to spare.

So to find out what your rifle will REALLY stand, a casting or slugging of the neck and throat end of the chamber will do the deed and you'll know what you have, and what you need to do.

I will tell you, you cannot go wrong with Bullshop's boolits. I just received a box of 44 Keith boolits that are beautiful

I've had good results with the Saeco 571 mold.
