View Full Version : Another strange WC mold: 358495 of different design

I recently got this single cavity 358495 WC Lyman mold, but the design of the bullet is different from the standard 358495.
Is this a factory modification/custom design offered on the standard 495 type?

Any information is appreciated.

Your mold appears to be a 358344 cavity wearing the wrong mold numbers on the blocks. This pattern used to be a popular concept offered by most of the mold companies as a target boolit. IMHO this should be a very effective boolit for the small revolvers in up-close-and-personal confrontations. I currently have this similar style mold for both 150 and 160 grain boolits, and both molds are 2-cavity Modern-Bond products. I have found the either boolit loaded over 5.0 Unique gives respectable velocity, and the lighter 150 grain produces slightly tighter groups from my K-38 (6"). When I'm out and about this is my usual carry load in the J-frames. My molds create nose sections smaller than bore diameter, thus no bore riding resistance to generate higher pressure. Congratulations on a really neat find.

Looks like it. Thanks for the tip.

I already tested these bullets in my K-38 and 686 and it produce nice groups but I suspect I can abtain more accuracy working on the load.

Thanks.

I have a 4 cavity H&G I bought off a member here and I really like it. It looks just like that (# 9). I haven't done any accuracy tests yet, but function is great and the loaded rounds look real mean . . .

358495 altered my a machinist to open up the top, that is my guess

I have that in an Ideal marked SC, 360344. Mine drops at .361 of very soft alloy, great 38 S&W bullet, sized down it works well in 38 Special.
According to Ideal hand book #35 it was a standard spec design but was a special order production item.
