I shot my limited edition 1886 45-70 carbine at a measured distance with a rangefinder at 78 yds., the bullets were 420 grain cast with a gas check. I did one sight adjustment and the final two shots got into 1.5 inches, I was pleasantly surprised because the factory buckhorns are rather large.
Especially when my eyes are 56 years old and I don't wear glasses.......

This would be Browning/Winchester made in Japan with 22" barrel? I just got same 1886 carbine 45-70 today and hope to try it out this weekend. I have plenty of 405 gr. cast flat base that I use for a Uberti 1885 Hiwall with blackpowder loads or smokeless 3031 loads. This 1886 came slightly used, almost mint condition and 3 boxes of factory 300 gr. JHP stuff that I might trade or sell the ammo. Looks like fun.

My 45-70 is a Winchester limited edition for the Vegas Shotshow for 2012, it is only one of three hundred fifty made. It has a full length magazine with a 20 inch barrel.
My load of 40 grains of IMR 4198 under the 405 grain gc cast bullet is right out of the Lyman cast book, with the gas check and lube, it weighs 420 grains.
This load clocked in at 1640 fps. over my Chrony speed meter.
I have pics of the rifle if someone wants to see them or post for me, pm email for pics.
