Boaz,

My mom was asking me about my church and the type of music that we sing. I told her that we sing about half old and half contemporary, she then asked "do you sing 'the river'?" I wasn't sure but the very next week It was on the list. I have become very fond of this song though I may have the title wrong. can you put it up?

I am going to the river,
Bringing sins I can not bear
Take my hand now
Lead me closer, lord I want to meet you there.

LOL , I remember Mom giving me a piece of Wriggleys Juicy fruit or Spearmint gum during the service in the sanctuary after 'Sunday school' . Giving me a piece of paper to write on , draw pictures , telling me to settle down , be still , be quiet . Telling me to bow my head and be respectful during prayer . Listen to the preacher/pastor .............I also remember her grabbing me by the arm , hauling me outside spanking my butt if I didn't . LOL Thanks mom .

PS..........got a lot of spankings !

Thanks for some great and poignant memories, guys! There are so many! I sang "The Old Rugged Cross" at boy's state in men's solo. Strained me like crazy, but got-r-dome, and got 2nd place. I think they knew how hard I was straining to hit the high notes? The other guy was clearly better. When Dad died, and I walked out to my car and turned on the radio, Eric Clapton was singing "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," one of his favorite songs. I kind'a took it as a sign from God that Dad was in very good hands. "Amazing Grace," especially when played on the bagpipes, always brings a tear to my eyes.

And two of my cousins, the "Rowdy Wright Brothers," have several bluegrass pickin' parties at their pickin' shed, and up to 500 people make it there, some national recording artists, but nobody gets paid. They're just their friends from frequent trips to the Grand Ole Opry, and come down for the fellowship and singing and my oh my, the EATS! It's all covered dish, and the Wrights or someone else good at it usually BBQ a hog. They have a good enclosed kitchen set up to keep the flies and gnats off the food, and to prepare the meals that need to be prepared. Many come in motor homes and do their cooking inside them. The comraderie and atmosphere and spirit is very much that of an old time "barn dance" that were held every year after the crops were gathered and sold, and there'd be several in the fall, and they were hugely attended and enjoyed. The music is all bluegrass and gospel, and all instruments are acoustic. I'm always touche by that old song, "keep your hands upon the throttle, and your eyes upon the rails."

Y'all bring back some really great memories. THANKS!

Thanks for the link. I love the Patsy Cline version, too, but it's really at its best sung bluegrass style, IMO. Maybe I just relate to it best that way because of my heritage, though?

The real title is "Life is Like a Mountain Railway," but I often can't recall that simply because the words are so moving. Most people today are so jaded that little affects them emotionally. I'm the opposite, usually, except when I'm attacked verbally, when I just chalk it up usually to people's lack of thought and understanding. Christ was panned more than any other human EVER will be, but he also had his devotees of like mind. I learned long ago that we each must simply make our choice of who and what we'll serve, and whether it'll be good or evil or our own selves and our wants/desires/demands (usually on the side of evil).

I've just found that being open to what things MEAN lets me use my emotions in a more positive direction, rather than a negative one as they usually seem to do for most of us these days. God didn't give us an intellect AND our emotions just to have them used to our detriment! But it's up to us HOW we use them, and whether they'll serve us well or advance evil in us and all that lies around us.

Being easily moved by things that MEAN something positive has been a boon to me. I hope more can open up to using our emotions more positively in their lives.

What a wonderful post, Ghosthawk! Thanks. Ernie was another "one of a kind," and when he sang that song, and you looked at his eyes as he sang it, you knew the depth to which he meant every word of it. THAT is what makes ANY gospel song so powerful - it's all in the delivery. And people who don't have it in their hearts can sing great sometimes, but it still won't touch the heart like someone who clearly MEANS what he's singing. Lots of great singers all over who never went or even wanted to go pro. Some of these rather plain looking ol' country gals can really raise the rafters of the church, and grab your heart and squeeze the evil out of it. Music indeed DOES have the power to soothe the savage beast - even us "moderns."

Have y'all ever noticed how just listening to someone sing like that can just totally change your focus and attitude? It's amazing the power good music and singing really CAN have when it's done to the marrow of our bones. Anyone who's never been so moved is SO much the poorer for it, and most likely just never let it in. People CAN do that, of course. As with knowing God's will when he whispers to us His advice, we have to be OPEN to it to let it come in. And some of us "moderns" are just too busy, too focused on the things that will all pass away, or whatever, and so they miss some wondrous and poignant things that more balanced and objective people "get." And really, it's all their fault, if you want to call it a fault. I just think of it as a choice or compulsion, but compulsions are usually just extensions of choices, so really, it's mostly about choices. And we make these every day.

Went to the Sr.'s dinner at church today, and a younger lady with a great voice sang for us. Wow, was she good! As to songs, there are two parts - the song itself, which is important, but even moreso is the deliverer. When I see someone sing, and close their eyes, lean back their head, and just let it flow out of them like water from an Artesian spring, THIS is as good as it gets, and it only seems to happen these days in live performances.

Talent at singing and playing music are common, but few seem to have the simple grace to really let themselves go, and pour their whole souls into the song. When you see this, you're really blessed. So let's give credit to those who typically sing this way, and really put into it all that God gave them to work with. It never fails to impress and satisfy me greatly.

You know, song is a highly subjective thing. I've always been a fan of blues, or at least the kind that grew out of black gospel. It's very moving in a more secular way, but its roots always shine through. I've also learned to appreciate those who can't sing on key very well, but put all their heart into it. I have a suspicion Christ doesn't care much about being in tune, but DOES care greatly about what's put into the songs of praise to Him. Such singers seem to me to reflect humanity itself. We may often not quite get the key right, but the MAIN thing is that we're in the fight as best as we know how to conduct it, and are WILLING to take it on. Courage and faith combined make everything so much sweeter than it appears to those who are too persnickety to appreciate the humble things.

I will let this thread die . Hard to imagine for me there if no interest here . Could care less I put it up or views . If it's no count it should fade away . I love hymns but there is little interest seems like . So be it .

There are just so many hymns that have moved me greatly in the past, that the list could go on forever, and each singer puts something special of themselves into their singing, too. I regret to say that I'm so addicted to the "old standards" that the new stuff just can't cut it with me. There's just no "history" to them for me, and the history of each hymn is what gives them that special, endearing quality. I guess I'm really gittin' old?

When my father died in the hospital, I went to the parking lot, cranked my truck, and the radio was on already. Eric Clapton's verson of "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" came on in its entirety, and it struck me fairly dumb for a moment. It was as if God was sending me a message not to worry about Dad, that he really WAS in a much better place. So that song will always hold a special place of honor in my heart. He always loved that old song, and could play and sing it well. I can still see that big ol' grin of his as he played and sang. He had a bit of the "ham" in him about his music. But never so much as to lose his humility. Country boys can't even spell "pridefulness," much less practice it!

I've always liked the older hymns. Up until my Wife had liver failure she was part of a group of 6 girls (Women) that regularly sang at Church. She just does not have enough air to sing anymore. I miss those times.

Amazing Grace. There's some good modern versions, specifically the one by Chris Tomlin.
