my son Karl got his first deer yesterday at last light a fine Doe #120 Encore 50 cal 100gr Pyrodex 250gr shock wave
the doe was facing him at 140 yards in a open field and would not turn. light was going fast so he took the shot from the pron position right down in the mud, hit her right in the center of her chest. ran about 100 yards or so into the woods.118976

Congrats to Karl on his first deer! Sometimes those head on shots work out just fine. I got a doe a year ago the same way, except she wasn't quite as far away, and she dropped right on her tracks. Something to learn from the experience.

yes something to learn after he shot the deer and he saw it run out of the smoke he thought he missed. i was in back of him
about 20 yards or so and saw were she ran into the woods. told him we need to look but dad i missed. no blood no tracks
but i just went up and down. then i saw just a little blood so then i take out a black light wow the grass just lit up with white
spots her blood was real watery almost clear but that black light trick worked. we found her in about 20 minuets or so
my son learned to always follow up on a shot. i learned that a $9 black light is priceless

yes a lot more exciting i stayed way in back of him so not too spook the deer. when he tried to use a tree as a rest but could not
get a good rest on it and then started to belly crawl in the mud. i just about lost it all i was thinking was shoot that deer shoot shoot
shoot OMG shoot it was a very long 10 min

good luck on your Daughters hunt and dont give up it took my son 4 years to harvest his deer all we have to hunt is public land

Very nice hunting story. Good going Karl and you get double points for a single shot muzzleloader!! You made a great shot. With the price of meat these days you have saved some money and have some of the best eating deer meat there is to be had. So glad you tracked it and found it. That makes for a very happy ending to a wonderful hunt.

Where do you get $9 black lights? I am not familiar with them and their use for following blood trails.

I have a few UV lights as well as one dedicated as a blood tracker and don't even take them along as I have never seen it help for us. I wonder if I am doing something wrong?

Thanks for the black light info. For that price, I can afford to give it a try. To date, I have lost one bull moose and one blackmail doe. Not too bad in over 40 years of hunting, but it still bothers me.
