Is it a good cast shooter ? Looking at one at the pawn shop , over all it looks good , he's asking 350ish for it .

What do you all think ?

that price depends. If it is a like new gun with a walnut stock its at the top end of what a used one should cost but if its a reallly nice one its probably worth it. I would offer 300 for it and no more myself but then i come from an area where marlins used are a dime a dozen. As to whether the gun/cartridge are good. I dont think any serious shooter should be without at least one .35 rem marlin. there that good.

It sure is strange how guns have a regional following. In Minnesota 35 Remingtons are all over and here in Nebraska I have only had one 35 Marlin come through in the last 10 years. Here $350 wold be a fair price for one and that's what i sold the one I had for.

IMHO the 35 Remington is the most under rated deer round ever made. In my neck of the woods a 150 yard shot is a long one (although every hunter claims they shot theirs at 300+[smilie=1:). At normal lever action ranges, I would take the 35 Rem over any other lever cartridge.

I have three Marlin's chambered for 35 REM . My first is a 336SC that was made in 1952 !
My second is a 336D that was made around 2001 I think in a Limited Run for Davidson's .
And my latest is one of the new 336XLR's .

I've killed deer with all three !!!! Cast in the 336SC , handloaded Remington Core Lokts for the 336D and the Hornady rubber tipped stuff in the XLR :drinks:

And given the oppurtunity of a nice old 336A crossing my path I may very well add a fourth !!!!

As far as price is concerned I paid $250 for my 336SC about 5 years ago and it is 95% or better !!!!

I see GPC has the Marlin barrels in 35 for $68 bucks. I might just have to convert my 30-30 to a better caliber.

What is GPC? I have a Marlin 35 that has a loose barrel. For that amount, I would be willing to try screwing in a new barrel.

The only thing I can see wrong with the .35 Rem. in a Marlin is that I don't have one!

Gun Parts Corp. or Numrich (//www.e-gunparts.com/) has what you're looking for.

Well I stopped and talked to the guy yesterday and I guess I'll have a new to me Marlin in 35 Remington home with me tonight , he let me have it for $300.00 so the extra $50.00 will help pay for the brass . LOL

Went shopping online for some goodies last night and it came to more than I'm paying for the rifle , go figure . :)

I'll get a pic or 2 up later .

I gave (if memory serves correctly) right @ 200 for mine but that has been around fifteen years ago. My 336 shoots rcbs 200s quite well and for the j-words 200 grain core loks and ww power points well.

I paid $200 for 336CS new in 1994(micro-groove), on clearance at "the Great Wall of china Mart". Wouldn't sell her for twice that. First cast load I tried in it could be covered by a 50 cent piece at 50 yards.

Offer 275 bucks OTD.
That will establish a starting point, and depending if they want to turn it, it may be yours!

I have two Marlin 35's, and my brother has one. All were acquired used. Brother Art's had pretty much no blueing left, but the barrels on all 3 are hardly worn. A good cast bullet for this caliber is the RCBS 200 GR flatnose with gascheck. Try 21.0 gr Accurate XMP 5744. Winchester brass can be obtained. Oddly enough, even though this is a Remington proprietary round, Remington doesn't seem to sell unprimed brass in this caliber--at least not any that I could find.

Love the 35Rem in my Marlin. If you want to shoot jacketed try the Speer 220gr flatpoints they are awesome in mine. Don't remember the powder or charge off the top of my head but can look if interested

I liked mine, and it shot cast good. I also had a gun that was bought shot a few times and then got put in a closet and got all rusty and the stock got broke. Reblued it, fixed the stock, and I had my pre micro groove pre drill and tap 35 remington, with a almost like new on the inside barrel, and a bolt though the stock, and the out side of the barrel all pitted. But it shure shot good, and I shot it alot.

P.S. I can get you some good loads for cast boolits

Got the 35 slugged last weekend and it came out at .358 , so it looks like I'll be sixing at .360 with the cast boolits for the frist go round with it . With the RCBS being GC'd I should have alot of options for powder .
Just wishing for warmer weather here in Michigan (about 6 more weeks) so I can go shoot .

It is the one high power cartridge you can duplicate jacketed ballistics with a cast bullet easily right off the bat. Also you can load CB's ffom 102 gr. .380 RN's up through 158 gr. SWC .357's and on up to 200 gr., 250 gr., and up to the 290 gr. Lyman 358009 RNGC. Versatile is the word.

Have Marlin 336A, 336C, and Remington M141, M81 rifles in this caliber. You going to have a grand time with it.

Do all of the 336 Marlin .35 Rem's have the microgrooves or do the earlier ones have standard cut rifling? I'm assuming that they're all microgroove.

My best friend from high school in the '60s had one and shot a lot of deer with it. Under normal hunting situations it was a good shooter, but when sighting in on a bench, I remember it as a brutal kicker.

I own three Marlin's in 35 REM .

My oldest is a 336SC and was made in 1952 . And this one is ballard grooved !

From their introduction in the 336 ('50 or '51) to all the way into 1955 (quite a run, huh?) the barrels where 7 grooved with .005" high lands and they were/are the best shooting .35's I've encountered to date. Mine is a 336A with an "H" date code (1951).

Bought mine in 1972 used for $50.00 from a co-worker, promptly put a Redfield receiver sight on it and promptly saw that I needed a Higher front blade------used an ivory bead off a Remington ? that I had---worked great! My standard deer load is 35 gr. 3031 IMR or whatever they call it now and a 200 gr. either Rem. or Hornady RN! Shot many deer with that load----not max, but who cares for New York woods hunting! Took a few deer with the same load using the same 3031 but with a Lyman 358315 200 gr. cast RNGS cast from straight wheelweights-----shot as well as the jacketed bullets and was as deadly !
I used to use the cast bullets alot for off hand practice and after awhile I could keep all of my shots (alot) in a 3" circle at 50 Yds------this is not target shooting, but just bringing the rifle to the shoulder and firing as quick as possible.
I never found the micro-groove rifleing to be a problem, but a close friend found his .44 mag wouldn't shoot them for S**t, boy was he disappointed!

Well guys , I'm slightly diapointed in this Marlin , every load I have tried in the last 2 weekends has shot great , light or heavy load , mind you it is only at 25 yds but still .
And I thought I was going to be able to develop some loads for this , yah , sure , geez , don't ya just hate these no brainer Marlins . :)

Keith, I have noticed that you use the word "weapon" quite often here. Please, refrain from that term on our board. There are other boards that term knives, axes, guns as weapons. Here, on this board, a firearm is a toy for pleasure, and nothing more. When we have another revolutionary war, then we can convert our toys into weapons. ... felix

Sorry Guys----I agree with Felix,
A friend wrote an article for a gun mag years ago and always referred his rifle as his weapon!
I told him that a weapon was to fight with and that he should refer to it as a firearm or rifle-------he saw the light in this day and age of GUN REGS !!!!!
The only time the term for a rifle or pistol is used as a weapon is when some BIGGGGG CRITTER wants to chew on your A**

When asked if I have any weapons, I state that I once wrote a report on a homicide where the weapon was a #2 pencil. I then ask if that is what they mean or if they want to be more specific. The last was at the Fed. Reserve Bank and Ft Harrison Army Depot outside Helena. In both cases they asked about guns and knives. I believe a weapon refers to an intent to do harm and or react to an imediate threat. Labeling our guns as weapons before that action or reaction occurs can only draw attention in a negative way. Thanks Felix, Gianni

I still have Dad's old 336 sc, 25 Rem, a 1952 model he purchased new.Stock is not prettiest I have seen, probably the straightest grained piece of walnut out there.

It shoots good with everything we have tried except the old 150 gr Rem cor loct.

I used to reload 158 gr semi wadcutters cast for my 38 and he really enjoyed those , highly accurate and almost no recoil. I finally got a proper 100 gr mold and that bullet goes through the action much better.

I used to work as a bartender, around hunting season (after a bad day in the field), you'd always get "that guy" who was never hunting again.

"that guy" sold me his Ithica featherlight 12ga and marlin 336 in 30-30 for $40 total.
