I know it. A place here in town always has tons of gov surplus, to include awesome vehicles. Can you point me in the right direction? The place , private retailer, has a M936-A2 wrecker for 22k. If I could get one of these for cheaper, that would solve some problems.

Most cities, especially those close to bases get the stuff for free. They have to keep it for 2 years before selling it, usually at an auction.
Unless it has changed anybody can get on the bidder list to directly bid on gov surplus, and you can bid anywhere in the country.

To get it free you need to be a State, County, or City Gov. Some tribal or other agencies are eligible as well. I used to sign for this property, brought in 4.3 million worth. See any base DRMO group for the details. Quite a bit of red tape to qualify as a gov screener and sign for this stuff. A very limited group allowed to do so. If you are thinking about for personal use, forget it. The period you must retain the property used to be 18 months, and some can't be resold, must be returned for disposal, always considered gov property. Violate the rules and get a long term vacation to club Fed. You can get this property BEFORE it goes to auction for reutilization free to a gov agency only.

Got on the bidder list many years ago, took a couple trips to equipment locations. I've seen better stuff in a junkyard! Never again! GW

Bought gov. surplus machine shop equipment back in the late 80's and early 90's. Went to some auctions and bid and did some by paper through the mail also. No problems.

I hope you ended up with some good stuff. Most of what I've seen was junk. I helped move the machinery out of my shop in 2008 when the unit was disbanded. We prepped it and moved it as carefully as we could. Bridgeport, LeBlonde, South Bend, etc, all good stuff in good shape, supposedly headed to auction or be placed back on inventory with another unit. Five years later it was still sitting outside, covered in rust. GD shame...

Or after the civil war starts, it will be all over the place, for free

some may have holes in them, or parts removed

It's a pretty complicated process. You go to the property disposal yard and see all kinds of stuff in there. For the first 6 months, excess is available to the owning service (in this case Army). If there are no takers, it's placed on a list for Department of Defense agencies. 6 months later it's state and local down to even the Boy Scouts. If no takers, it's put up for bid by the public and you get a shot at it on a sealed bid (if there are no insiders who know someone and barely outbid you).

It takes a bit of reading and paperwork to find out what, when and how. For instance, fired brass last time I looked required an End User Certificate. The bottom line is that you have to know and work the system.

No doubt there is loads of abuse in the system by state and local governments but DOD is just wanting to get it out of the way regardless of price.

If you can manage to negotiate the obstacle course of paperwork and regs and are capable of moving it within 7 days of purchase and are lucky, there are some great deals there./beagle

Watch the fine print. Most of it is as is where is and you have a limited time to pick it up and have to supply the equipment to remove it. Saw a bunch of brass auctioned not far away but the 55 gallon drums the stuff was in was not part of the deal you had to empty everything and re load and no equipment so bring your own containers and fork lift.

Wifes cousin bought a couple of those, ex Canadian military, 6
wheel drive, and about 5 mpg.
Great power, great traction with the right tires, but when you sink one in the mud it is stuck.

Alex (from Ice Road Truckers) bought on in Winnipeg and roaded it to Yellowknife. Apparently it wasn't fun after the first 30 hours..

Always thought a 6x6 would make sweet off road camper conversion.

Since there is some knowledge of Gov Auctions on here I have to ask about the mutilation policy of some auctions-
1480lbs of Brass Turnings (http://www.govliquidation.com/auction/view?auctionId=8464105&cm_re=gl-homepage-_-carousel-2-_-item-1)

How do you mutilate brass turnings?

I see this on the lead auctions and figure you could melt the lead down, why it's needed for lead I don't know, but brass turnings?
