Has anyone tried the Lyman 12 gauge slug with Longshot powder, if so what load and how good did it shoot velocity and accuracy? I have some Fiocchi 3" hulls and some Fed 3" hulls and not sure of a good place to start.

Hi leadhead 500. I have not used Longshot powder. So I can't help you there. But you mention a couple components that I use. I do cast my own Lyman sabots. And my Remington 870 with rifled barrel likes them. In addition, I have had good results with the Fiocchi 2 3/4" hull (#064121603). It is the green hull.

With these two components I add either 26 grains of Unique, or 25 grains of universal. With both loads I use Ballistic Products wad #PT 1232. It is a tall wad with a long crush zone. Either recipe will give a muzzle velocity of 1300 fps. +/-.

I'm 65 and as I've grown older I've become recoil shy. The relatively light powder load and the long crush zone of the wad help mitigate recoil. And both are consistently accurate in my Remington. At 25 yards I get tight, 3 shot touching clover leafs. At 50 yards the group expands to 3" in diameter. The Fiocchi hulls are very nice to work with in my 2nd hand 50+ year old Mec Jr.

This doesn't address your question regarding either Longshot, or 3" hulls. But hopefully my experience will be of some value to you.

Happy hunting,

MichiganMike

here is somethign to get you started:

also, BPI lists btw 34gr and 40gr longshot w 1&1/8oz slugs: careful as the wads are different, but the start charge of 34gr might help you.

Doesn't that slug weigh 525 grns? If so, don't load but one shell with 40 grns of Longshot. After you pick yourself up you'll swear that mule that kicked you was on steroids. I went through 8 lbs of Longshot in 1 1/2 yrs in 12 ga loads and it's a great powder. My best load for a 7/8 oz lee slug is 34 grns. At most I'd start with 32 grns with a 525 grn slug and work from there. Good luck.

ADDED: My comments regard 2 3/4" hulls, didn't pay attention to complete post. Would modify above comments by 2 grns for 3" hulls.

Regarding the weight of the sabot, which Lyman states is 525 grains. I'm learning little scrap lead is pure lead. Recently I smelted some roofers sheet lead, and lead pipe from the City of Lansing's old water system.

The sabots were weighing in at 489 grains +/- 1 grain. Depending upon the alloy you use, your weight per slug will vary. You may want to keep an eye on this as you choose your powder charge.
