I have a 296/250 in reasonable condition. I am trying to decide whether to buy forming dies for the 250 or rechamber it for the 256.
Opinions and advice welcome!

I thought those had a bore size of .251" like .25 ACP, not the .257" like most other .25 caliber cartridges. One of my books suggests turning the rim of .22 Hornet cases to size, cut to length, and use a .25 ACP sizer to put the neck on the case.

I would check the bore diameter first, like texassako said. Cartridges of the World 8th ed. says the .297/250 uses .250" diameter bullets.

My final decision would depend on what the final use of the rifle would be. If you are going to use it for small game only, the 297/250 makes sense. If you want to use it for coyotes or turkey, (I think it is still legal to use rifles in Texas for them) I would go with either the .25-20 Winchester or your preferred .256 Win Mag.

Also if we could question the condition of the rifle. Original caliber rifles are becoming more rare and collectable.

This could pave the way for an interesting loading project.

Thank you all very much!
Think I'll make a few rounds from hornet cases and try them out.
Probably use the thing to shoot turtles in the tanks.

Please if you could keep us informed how go with it that would be great.
These little obsolete cartridges fascinate me!
Never know, it might be a surprising little critter getter as is :target_smiley:
