I have just purchased a Ruger #1 in 257 AI, custom barrel and trigger. I have never owned a #1. I am really impressed. I shoots both 100 gr. jacket and cast bullets extremely well. Pushing cast bullets around 2300- 2500 fps with good accuracy. This will be a great project for the milder winter days.

I have one in 7x57 AI and 30-06. Both have custom stocks and both shoot real small groups with jacketed bullets. Never ran a boolit through either one of them.

The No.1s are very classy rifles. I have enjoyed having and shooting them through the years. Right now I am using an all weather 45-70 for shooting holy black and it is so fun.

I just ordered one yesterday in 30-30 Winchester with Circassian walnut and Boddington checkering. It was made for Lipsey's and Ruger upgraded the wood on some of them of which this is one.

My local gun store faxed a copy of his FFL and I mailed the funds today as well, so maybe I will see it by the end of the week. A new cast bullet gun for sure.

i have always thought it a shame to ruin the looks of beautiful wood with cut marks....

checking is seldom done with an eye to perfection.

I even saw a rifle from the GunMakersGuild showcased in a magazine... the gun worth big bucks, and the checkering has so many flaws I lost count.

there is little pride in craftsmanship anymore

As a general rule, like most of us I suspect, I really like most rifles for the wonderful devices that they are.

However.... I can say that I shamelessly LOVE Ruger #1 rifles. I wish I could justify more of them than the two I already own (.416 Rigby and .303 British)....hmmm; bit of an Old Blighty accent there, eh wot?

I agree with BruceB

Ruger1's are a think of beauty. I really love their styling. I have seen some with some REALLY nice wood with an understated elegance....

I need to win a lottery

A gun safe is deficient without at least one Ruger #1 in there somewhere. I love mine, and I have never held or shot others that I did not covet.

Me too. The Ruger rifles, #1 and 77 have very well shaped stocks that don't need any help in gripping the human hand being the marvelous creation that it is. If checkering was necessary military rifles would have had it for centuries. Checkering belongs in the same category as engraving, decorative but non essential.

I'm blessed with a No.1 in 243 and a No.3 in 223, both bought over 25 years ago. I've been hankering for one in 7x57, Although I would jump on a 6.5x55 if I found one.

I have both 1's and 3's in rifle as well as pistol calibers. I also have a custom #3 in 22 TCM that I am figuring out. They all look very nice and with the correct loads they all shoot very nice.

Lovely rifles - the ultimate in "class" - but sometimes have they light firing pin strikes (use Federal primers), and you need to hold that fore-end exactly the same, shot to shot, or they can be all over the place. I find them slightly frustrating (there're NOT a trouble free bolt action), but they are SO beautiful that they still sway me. In my rational moments, I reach for a Model 70, but when I hold the No.1, DAMN it's so beautiful...

Thanks for that, but it says no 6.5x55 left. Also, a little too rich for my blood and bank account. I guess I need to keep surfing Gunbroker for a used one.

I have a 6.5x55 swede custom made by some gunsmith in the 50's I am told. who? I have no idea. made on a swede model 94 carbine full international type stock and only the safety has been changed on it & the barrel is the same 17"something? posted photo's on here years ago. I can no longer paste any thing on this site and I don't know why? tried to put pictures of 3 new to me shingle shot rifles on here in the last year or so. no can do. oh well.... gd

I have one in 9.3x74 and bought the NOE group buy 280 gr. mold. Shoots great. 5/8 in. @50 yards and 2100fps with Varget. Likes 4895 just as much. I use poly filler to take up some space and water drop the bullets. Haven't shot anything with it yet. Think penetration will be a little over kill for our blacktails but want to try next year.

to my eye, the figure and quality of the wood on No.1's has really gone downhill, starting about 15 years ago.

I have an unusual Ruger No.1 in 22PPC and mounted with an All Americal 25X. I have shot a small group of .210"with it!

I go along with having to have the right load etc. Have a #1B in 257 Roberts. Had problems with 75 and 87gr. bullets due to long throat. Finally tried 100gr. bullets. Rifle gives excellent accuracy. Currently gathering necessary equipment for cast bullets for a #1A in 30-06. My feeling are to work on finding the right load rather than start hacking and grinding on the rifle new from the box. Yes, the wood has gone down hill in recent years but still glad to have several of these newer rifles at this time. Every old dog gets his behind in the sunshine every now and then.

I have shot deer with a 270, 7mmRemMag, and 257 Roberts Ackley.
They all work just fine.

For actions, I have shot deer with a Win M70 pre 64, VZ24 Mauser, Rem700, 1885 Win, and Ruger #1.
They all work just fine, but the Ruger #1 is best.

For barrels, I have shot deer with Pac Nor, Lothar Walther, Shilen match, Ruger, and Shilen select match.
THey all work fine, but shilen select match is best.

For bullets, I have shot deer with Berger VLD hunting, Barnes triple shock, and Nosler ballistic tip.
The rest suck, Nos Bal Tip is best.

For deer, I like 115 gr nos bal tip in 257RAI.
