The 30 Reece is a 38 Special necked down to 30 caliber. My intent is to shoot cast lead bullets no heavier than 115 grains for small game from speeds of 1050 fps to 1400 fps for plain base and speeds upto 2200 fps for gas checked bullets.

Shilen offers the following barrel twists suitable for cast lead bullets. 1:12, 1:14, 1:15, & 1:17.

What rate of twist would be most suitable for this cartridge?

Reloading data will be similiar to the 32-20 Winchester.

I'd go for 1:17 though any of them would likely work. The 32-20 and 30 Carbine usually use 1:20 and you are shooting essentially the same bullets out of yours.

BTW, what dies are used with the 30 Reece? I have a 30 Badger that uses 7.62 Tokerev dies to form it. Is yours the same thing?

The 30 Reece dies are propriatary to Carson Reece. They were a special production by Hornady. Case has a 30 degree shoulder kind of like a minature ackley case. He designed it for silouhette shooting. I want to use it for squirrels and varmits.

Aah, similar but different!

I have a similar plan for mine. I built a Contender barrel with 1:10 (old Remington 300 win mag barrel) that works very well for silhouettes, and a Ruger #1 with a 1:14 that is proving quite good at 200M target shooting so far. I need to explore them a lot more but time is always tight so work progresses very slowly.

Never heard of a .30 Badger but now I'm very intrigued. Where would one get a reamer and a set of dies for it? Google ain't showing much for load data. Should be great for a 16" barrel Handi Rifle.

Do a search on this forum for it. It was designed by Badgeredd who frequents here. There are several threads about it, including some I started.

Dave Manson makes the reamers, and you use a 38 spl. headspace gauge. I use a Lee 7.62 Tok die to form the cases, a 375 mag carbide die to size the body, and made a seating die using the reamer. Neck it tight enough you don't need to resize the brass after firing.

Sorry about the thread hijack....
