I took my Browning 1885 45-70 out to the range this morning...first time since last September and the weather was perfect. I got the urge to shoot it again and took along several different bullets/charges using mostly Swiss 1.5 powder.

I was rather pleased at the groups and especially was surprised at the group with the 525 gr Postell bullet(Brooks "New Postell"). I didn't expect it to do that well in the 45-70 but was pleasantly surprised. Before I got a chance to shoot that group an old timer(older than me even) came over and asked what I had and if he could shoot one. I gave him the heaviest bullet I had, which was the Postell, to see his reaction. That's why there's just four holes in that target. I don't know where he shot, maybe his own target.

The custom Brook's moulds did well also and that first target they weren't sized but slip fit. I think I've found a couple of pretty decent loads.

Those are the verniers that came with the rifle believe it or not. Front sight is a globe/ spirit level. I can't recall if I replaced it or used the factory sight.

I consider the Browning BPCR to be the finest black powder cartridge rifle in the western world. You can have a near perfect trigger, center hung hammer, and they come with one of the finest black powder barrels available at any price. They ship with "more than decent" sights and will shoot competitively with anything. In addition, they have the finest materials and heat treat and the action design is super strong. I shot one of their 40/65's in competition for about fifteen years and the rifle never let me down (I let me down from time to time but my rifle NEVER let me down:roll:).

I shot a custom bullet from NEI (when Walt Melander was running the show) and had superb results.

YOU have excellent equipment and it looks like you are well on your way to finding THE load. A feller can't "buy a win" but it sure helps to have good gear and a good load if you are going to be competitive.

All of the above is merely my opinion, of course, but I stand by what I said. Now, I'm heading for the storm cellar as the Sharps shooters may, just may, throw something my way:roll:. There is more than one good make in BPCR's out there but the Browning became my choice.

Having lost the vision in my right eye, my BPCR days are over but I sure had fun while it lasted...:drinks:.

I'd like to find one in 40-65 but they're like hens teeth but no worse than finding a Lone Star Roller. I've been very happy with this rifle from day one and it continues.

So sorry to hear of your eye, Dale. I was out of shooting for four months due to my leg problem and the impending surgery but at least I can walk again and no pain back and forth putting up targets. It was a long dry spell.

There is currently an excellent deal on a Browning .40-65 on the ASSRA site....

Not now, it's gone. As usual I procrastinated too long. Reckon it wasn't in the cards.
