Another casting question.

I have a quantity of cerrotru metal, 42%Bismuth/58%tin, and was wondering what effect the bismuth would have on bullets?

Thanks,

John

John, bismuth is like antimony in making the boolit hard, but without the expanding properties of antimony. However, it will make a boolit heavier instead of lighter when used in lieu of antimony. Bismuth is preferred over antimony in guns with marginal twists, like boolits for the old model 99 250 Savage at 14 twist, the hornets of yesteryear using 16, and on some fragile (worn) 14 twist 22's. ... felix

Expanding or not depends on the alloy, but I don't think anyone would use enough in boolits for that to be an issue.

If you use that alloy in the proper proportions for the tin in it, I think you'll be happy.

Thanks for the info.

I also have another thread (Bullet Metal) with a question about hardness verses mass for checking the final alloy mix.
