I came across a nice clean T/C Hawken 54cal. in my local Gunshop. Beautiful wood grain in the stock. Looks to be in like new condition....maybe even unfired. No box or accessories. Looks like a standard T/C Hawken with octagon barrel and double set triggers. The barrel is stamped " T/C HAWKEN 25th Anniversary 1970-1995".

I'm thinking this might be nice to try this fall for deer hunting here in lower Michigan (late season muzzle loader hunt).
What is the value of such a rifle?

tell us what they want for it and then we can go from their. a real find and if it is with in the ball park, snap it up.

54 is rare. Found one yesterday in my LGS that looked like the kit was put together by a blind drunk nine year old....and they had 200 on it. I have two Hawkins, one Hawkin Cougar, and a Renegade...all fifties! Would love to find a good deal on a 54 or 45.

Well, I talked 'em down to $150 and walked away with it. Not sure if this is a bargin or not, but I wanted it and didn't think I was getting burned at that price.

They had just purchased a whole collection from someone and were more concerned with the higher end guns in the collection.
This muzzle loader was just a tag along item to them so they were flexible when it came to price. (This gunshop doesn't do much in muzzle guns so I suspect they were just happy to be rid of it)

I just bought a Cabela's (Investarms) left handed .54 cal in fine condition at Johnson's in Adrian for $180 and thought that I got a good deal.

SCORE!! Congratulations-right place/right time! Yes, definitely take it hunting. It's a whole different experience. My White Mountain Carbine .54 drops Mule Deer in their tracks.

I just agreed to pay more than twice that for a T/C 50. You beat the BrassMagnet.

Cast up a selection of T/C maxi balls, Lyman minie ball, Lyman buffalo bullets, and roundball and got the Hawken dirty last weekend.
What a fun gun to shoot!
Bottom line.....she seems to like good old patched roundball the best so that's what I will be using.

how heavy of a powder charge did you load for the selection?

That was a great deal. I would have been all over that.

Played with loads ranging from 70grains all the way up to 120grains using Pyrodex Select. The roundball load that I settled upon is 80grains under a .530 ball.

The roundball gave best accuracy. The buffalo boolit on a 110grain load was a close second. It gave acceptable accuracy, but they were very tight in the bore and had to be started with a mallet......not something I like for a hunting load.

you mentioned the maxi-ball. how did it do and what did you use for bullet lube? That round ball is all you will need for deer for sure.

I had the same barrel on a TC renegade stock, glasss bedded, and scoped, it would put 3 Hornady great plains or TC Maxi Hunter into a cloverleaf at 100yds, with 105 gr;s of @FFG. I took 43 deer with this combo here in KY and Tenn.

I ran across a T/C in 54 cal but they want $500...not the deal others have found. I thought of getting one of these back in the 70's and never did. I wish I had now.

I've always had better luck with black powder than the sustitutes. People piss and moan about being to dirty, but it shoots lots better!! I've shot 100 rounds with black powder and not cleaned so that was fine for me.
