Does anybody know how much barrel is needed to get to 1100 fps with this cartridge? Or alternatively, What is the shortest barrel to use with a silencer? I'm thinking that the outer skin of a silencer could be used as a forearm and take the place of a free float tube. Say 18" LOA. Thanks, Ted

my AAC has a 16" [7 twist] it will make 2400 with 110's
1300 easily with 165's
and gets the lee 230 down to slow.

I used to have a 10" Contender barrel in .300 Whisper, and it would easily do over 1100fps with a 180gr cast. As to using the suppressor for a place to put your hands, I hope you plan on wearing gloves or maybe wrapping the can with something so that you don't burn yourself, cause a can gets hot quick. I'd be telling you the same thing though if you were asking about reaching down and grabbing a car muffler immediately after a road trip too though.

My dad has a 16 inch AAC bolt gun, we do 1078 fps (avg) with cast 240 grain and aa1680
Factory remington subs are slightly slower then my loads

I have a 10.5 " Noveski with a YHM can that comes out to 18" overall..

Easy to get 1900 FPS (Milhec 312-159HP) very accurately at 100 Yds or all the way down to 800 FPS Lee 309 230 or NOE 311299HP
As others said if using the Suppressor as a handguard you are only going to get a couple of shots before it gets real hot
Also make sure you get a pistol length gas system if you want to shoot subsonic easily
and also keep in mind about the tax stamp costs
for subs H or IMR4198 will be your friend

I have a Rem model 7 SBR in 300BLK that I shoot exclusively with subsonic loads and suppressed. barrel length is 10.5" with another 10" of suppressor, and even at that short of length, exceeding 1,100 fps is no problem with 225 gr jacketed or 245 gr lead bullets. for me the challenge is hitting the 1,025 - 1,050 fps sweet spot and keeping them there at temperatures that range from 80f to -10f

Questions like this make me want to get one of those integrally suppressed 1 tax stamp suppressed SBR's.

Thanks, That was what I was wondering. I figgered the Blackout cartridge would be lacking for case volume, and might do well with faster powders, and therefore not suffer too much from a short barrel. Which would make a short barreled rifle with a can an attractive option. Has anyone seen or tried a full length free float tube on a longer barrel and vented the barrel to make an integral silencer? If it gets too hot maybe use a vertical front grip?

I'm not dead set on using the AR platform. It seems to me that it could be quite noisy when cycling. Also, I'm not interested in full auto, more of a stealth weapon. Maybe a Mini 14 converted to a pumpaction.

if you want quiet a bolt gun is your best bet.
you could then use fast pistol powders to get your velocity without a lot [almost none] of heat to the can.
I sat down and rattled off over 50 rounds one after the other in 70-f heat and could carry the rifle by the barrel.

the Black Out was designed to expend most of its energy within a 9-inch barrel. Some factory ammo will and some won't, depending on the powder they used.

I have a 300 with a suppressor. Stand back and its very quite. With my ear lying right next to the AR15 action, the action is quite loud. I am now looking for a bolt gun :)

why not just turn the gas system off?

There are some AR uppers and bolts that will allow you to keep the AR platform, but end up with bolt action. To test to see if you like that concept without buying anything, just disconnect your existing gas system.

But if you want something that is accurate and you won't feel bad experimenting with, try a H&R single-shot. But then again, if you are going with a single shot, you don't need to limit yourself to the .300 AAC cartridge. A .30-30 might even be a better choice.

I've always had a .45 acp hot loaded in a short barreled pump action as my sneaky silenced assassin's weapon idea. Never got around to experimenting though. Putting a bolt handle on the AR 15 would allow one to ease the bolt back and chamber a new round, it otta be as quiet as you are good at "easing". Of course disabling the gas system (put a screw in the gas block to block the gas?) would be necessary. With uppers available for 60$, one might could afford to remove the dust gate, and cut a slot to allow full travel of the bolt. But, but, but what do you do with the operating handle? Toss it just like they should have done in the first place.

I've got an 8" and a 9" .300 and both of them do very well. Both of them use suppressors. Both of them are quiet and accurate. Do not use the can as a forearm...if you do you wont hold it for more than a few shots. Get a forearm that the can can go in and it will be better looking and more practical.
