Picked up an 1865 Ballard Military carbine at the Maryland Antique arms show. Beautiful bore. Had the breechblock converted to Center fire and chambered for 44-40. Working up a mild load, it shows great promise

Wonderful! I'm sure you'll enjoy that rifle. I'm envious.

Have had the opportunity to play with a JM Marlin #2 Sporting that needed to be sleeved from .38 Ballard Long to .38 Long Colt. That is a CRAZY-SWEET 100 yard offhand rifle. Hope to soon get a crack at a #5 Pacific in .45-70 that is in the process of being rehabilitated.
VERY fast lock time for a hammer-fired gun. I'm starting to itch for one in .38-55 somethin' fierce.

That sounds like a honey of a find. Show us the goods. Ha. I like the 44-40. Good luck and have a ball.
