Someone (Mitch) gave me a TC Maxi Ball mold a while back (.50 360 gr), so I figured I'd give it a try.

I found point of aim at 50 yds only about one inch lower than the saboted .44 310 gr boolits I used last year. I'll adjust the scope at the 100 yd range, hopefully tomorrow.

The Maxis were cast 16:1, and lubed to the hilt with 5/4 Beeswax/Olive Oil, over 90 gr (V) of 777 ffg powder, & Fedl 209A primers. I only fired six today (looks like four) all at one target. Five measure less than 1/2" center to center and one "flier" (2nd shot) made the total group 1". I hope they do well on the 100 yd range.

Oh, and I didn't to do anything but load and shoot -- no swabbing the barrel, or popping an extra primer between shots, and no leading, but a lot of wax clean up :-)

Randy

ps- thanks Larry Gibson for the tips on alloy, lube, etc.

What gun were you shooting?

A CVA Optima Elite with 1:28 barrel -- it's nothing to brag about at 50 yds, but I was kind of glad that this big fat heavy boolit seems to shoot well, and was almost already sighted in. No sabots to worry about, just lots of sticky beeswax.

Just wondering - Why 16:1? and not something closer to 20 or 40 to 1.

You can not ask for better than that.

From what I understand, 16:1 helps strengthen the Maxi Ball in order to withstand being pushed 1500+ fps, while still allowing it to obturate and seal the bore.

Even though tin is expensive, even with lead at $1 and tin at $14, the Maxi Balls are stil less than 10 cents each.

Oh yeah, they sure do cast easily with that amount of tin!
