odd 9mm brass

Recently I found some 9x19 brass that looked odd. When I looked inside the brass, I noticed a "step-down" about half way to the bottom. I assume it was a shelf against which the bullet was seated. Has anyone else seen anything like this? Is this something new?

How would I know if it is Tulaammo? What would the headstamp look like? Is it IMT? What is the purpose of the step-down?

It's probably Ammoload brass. I cull these and discard them because the internal case volume is reduced by the constriction.

It's most likely AmmoLoad brass. Federal and Speer do the same thing with their .380 brass to prevent bullet setback. It's reloadable, but you have to use a bullet roughly the same length as the original bullet, whatever it was, and work up your load as you would when changing any other component.

If you do decide to load it, make sure you don't seat the bullet beyond the step, or you'll either deform the bullet's base or bulge the brass, or both.

I load these the same as all my other brass with 115gr FMJ's. I have had no issues. YMMV.
