Lee .452-200 LSWC in .45 Long Colt?

Picked up an Evil Roy .45LC and I'm not yet ready to order a mold. I have a pile of .45 size to .452 from my Lee 200gr #68 clone. Anyone shoot these out of a .45LC just for plinking? I've got bullseye and unique to load them with...

I've loaded a master cast 200gr SWC that is very similar for my dad's 45 LC and my 45 ACP. I cast some of the TL variety of Lee's 200 gr SWC that we will try in his Ruger once the current supply runs out.

He hasn't had any problems with fouling or accuracy, but commented that the SWCs aren't quite as easy to load into the chambers than a RN or RNFP profile.

I use that Lee mold (200gr SWC) in my cowboy pistols as my standard bullet. It is an easy way to tell my pistol loads from my rifle loads (which get a 250 gr RNFP Lyman in them)

Do it frequently, although the Lee mold I've got was "de-horned" of the bevel base by the member here who sold it to me.
ive played around with crimping over the shoulder, into the driving band and even taper-crimping with a .45 ACP die as well.
Each method worked, but in most cases, I'll just roll-crimp over the shoulder and shoot away!

I just seat the shoulder flush with the case mouth like I do on all my pistol rounds.
taper crimp and shoot them.

5 grs of b-eye or 7.5 of the unique makes a light shooting round that won't try to move the boolit in the revolver or in a lever guns mag tube.

Lee also makes a 200 gr RNFP which actually drops boolits weighing 215-217 gr. in my mold. It shoots well in my 45ACP and 45LC and has proven in my T/C barrels to be accurate to 150 yards (the farthest I can get a decent sight picture with my eyes and open sights).

I use 7.3 gr Bullseye under that same bullet or any other 195 - 205 gr SWC or RNFP in my own Evil Roy Uberti, my artillery Uberti and my M1873 Uberti Carbine. It shoots just fine at 930 - 950 fps out of the revolvers and 1150 - 1200 fps out of the rifle. That is my standard load and is very accurate in all 3 guns. Not a cowboy action load BTW.

Ya just gotta try it Kenn. :) I have a very similar mold, the Lyman 452460 ( a clone of the #68) and my data log shows a 7gr. charge of Bullseye printed a 1 inch group at 75yds. at 953 fps from a 7 1/2 inch Ruger Blackhawk. Mind ye, that's sandbagged and with a scope. Oddly enough going to 7.5gr. (1015fps) blew the group out to 6 inches. Same gun, same day. Go figger? Never could get that dang boolit to function in any of 3 of my 1911's but it sure works dandy in the .45 Colt! Velocity selection really seems to matter with that boolit but when you git it right you'll be doing the happy dance. Audie...the Oldfart..

When I bought my first 45colt all I had were lee 45auto molds, so naturally I tried them first. In my 4 5/8" Blackhawk sized .452 with LLA. I found the magic around 7.3grs with bullseye. The lee 45-228 seemed a little more at home over 7grs bullseye.

SWC's work fine in 45 Colt, as said, they take more care loading into the chambers. I taper crimpted.

I use the Lee 200gr SWC exclusively in SAA's and 1911's with no issues. I will say though that I've got a Lee 200 RNFP 6 holer on my Midway wishlist to replace it. More because the bevel base can be a pain in a Lyman 4500 than anything else.

I shoot the lee 200 gr swc bullet out of my Blackhawk 45lc/45 acp convertible .for 45 lc loads I have good results shooting it over 8.0 gr of imr 4756 bench rested at 25 yrds , its a nice comfortable plinking load ive also had good results with this bullet using win 231 and unique but I ran across 4 lb of 4756 a little while back so that's the load ive stuck with .

I use both the 200gr swc and rnfp in my 45colt BH and lever. They are my standard plinking weights. I also have gone to this weight for all of my 45acp loadings

Thanks for all the info guys... need to find some .45LC brass at this point that is reasonably priced. I'll size some at .4523 or so which is what they are coming out of my lee .452 sizer at. I'll report back when I've got a few down range.

If you're tumble lubing and using a Lee push through sizer I would suggest just skipping the sizing. Measure the throats of your gun but I've shot a lot of .454 out of SAA's (modern) without issue. You'll find that you might just get less "blow back" with a larger boolit. That and it saves a step in the process.
