Has anyone ever put a ladder sight on these. If so is the front sight to tall or did you use it as is? When I get mine back with the new Barrel I will have to get sights. I just started checking now so I know what to order. If I get good responces I will go ahead and order before I get it back.

Not me personally, but know where the info is of someone who has.

The above should answer some of your questions. When it comes to Handi Rifles, these guys have done a bunch with them...'cept maybe push lead through 'em.

If it doesn't have to be a ladder type of rear sight, I offer another way.

I used to have a buffalo classic, and wanted an adjustable receiver sight on it. After a little digging around, I used a Williams foolproof receiver sight for a T/C ("Scout", I think). The sight had a design that would secure on TOP of the barrel, and then have the normal W/E adjustments.

I've long since sold the rifle and sight. If I remember correctly, I had to drill a hole in the alumunium base of the sight to accomodate the existing drilled and tapped holes in the rifle barrel.

The set up worked great, and was as secure as they come.

I will be using it in Cowboy Action Shoots. I don't think they allow reciever sights.

Straight from the current SASS handbook:

No bolt or receiver mounted sight is permitted.
Modern style click adjustable barrel or receiver sights are not allowed.

You might look at Dixie for something like this one:

Guess this one will work:

http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=18735&title=WESSON+%26+HARRINGTON+LONG+RANGE+SIGHT

And some photos of the sight on a Buff Classic (3rd post down).

Also, in the body of the text, they do say the front sigth is too tall. Some have said the .404" high 17A sight works better with the Smith sight & the .494" high 17A works better with the Williams FP.

OBXPILGRIM- That is the one I had planned on ordering. My ? is Will the front sight that is on it now work or will I need to get a shorter one. I got the one just like it but for dovetails and put it on my Marlin Cowboy. The front sight on it was to tall, I had to get the shortest globe site Lyman makes for it.

I think the taller front sight you have on the gun now will reach out too 400 yards
Bernie has the lower one (globe on it) .404
I use to have the B.C> set up in 45-70 I upgraded the rear sight to Williams and used a t/c front fiber optic sight which let me get out too 500 yards without any problems.
I just purchased a target model in 38-55 i was thinking installing a rear ladder sight inlet ted into the wrist of the wood or may just replace the front sight to a .404 with the original peep that comes on the gun;I don't think I will need any more then 200 yards with the 38-55

Am I correct here ?--- The shorter to front sight the farther you can go?

Yep.
A shorter front sight raises the muzzle a bit more when you align it with the rear sight.

My gunsmith and I inletted the stock just behind the receiver (on the wrist) and installed a Lee Shaver Long-Range Soule sight. It works out past a half-mile with the factory front sight. You can either just screw the base to the wrist or inlet a bedded and tapped block there to mount the base on.

Who sells these sights?

Montana Vintage Arms, Cimarron and Buffalo Arms sell the Soule-type. So do a handful of others. I tihnk Midway and Brownell's might also have them. Prices will vary quite a bit.

The Taylor Creedmore is an affordable decent sight. It comes in two heights.

Marbles also has there tang sight that is specially made for the Buffalo Classic and Target rifles. The work with the high front sight but due to the short stalk they will only get you out to 200 to 300 yards. Any ladder sight can be screwed to the stock and as long as it is perpendicular for and aft as well as side to side it will work just fine. You can get the Marbles from Buffalo Arms. My TR is used for informal matches at my club where sights are not one of the criteria as long as they are iron. I have a Williams FP on it and it works really well out to the 20 yard range we have. I have enough elevation to get on at up to 400 yards with the standart tall front sight. Could probably stretch it to 500 yards with the lowest front Lyman 17 sight. but I have lots of guns with tall sights more suitable for long ranges.

Guarantee you'll like the Lee Shaver sights. They're good and only half the price of some of the others.
