I am looking for a Lyman 44Mag/Spec GC mould. Mostly punching paper but maybe for some whitetail deer. I am looking at #429215 and #429244. 210gr and 255gr respectively. Any personal experience? Preferences?

I personally like the 429244. Mine casts easy and it is a very versitile slug. Has the mass you need for big deer but you can run it easy for plinking. My .02.

You will probably own both eventually anyway. So if hunting may be involved, start with the heavier of the two.

My idea is a bit different from BA's. If i think I'll like bullet "X" and have a chance at a mould,I grab it. Then when the other one shows up I'll know if I want to sell/trade "X" or not. He is correct about eventually getting both.

Over on ebay there are several 429244 and 429215 moulds available. I have a 429244 from a forum member and bid the '215...wish me luck. There are also 429421s available. All classic LYMANS.

You will accumulate moulds, so you might consider that gas checks are a bit expensive for plinking or target use. My 44 plinker/target is the 200 grain double ended wadcutter from GLL's group buy...I got one of the extras and I owe GLL big time for it...I REALLLY, REALLY LIKE THAT BOOLIT!

Get a plain base 4 cavity boolit mould for your big usage item and a 2 banger for the gas checked hunting boolit. Consider a lighter weight if you have adjustable sights...less recoil, better control and save that precious lead!

Reloading doesn't save you much money, but you sure get to shoot a lot more.

I have a dozen or so moulds, mostly for the BPCR's I shoot. 430-650 grainers. You just can't buy those in the quality I need. I have a few for the 32-20 and 44-40 I cast in 20:1 for the 1873 original rifles. The boolit is for Scoped Redhawk and Contender so HOT is no problem. I can always use the 200gr 44-40 mould for plinking in the others. Looks like the 429244 will be the ticket.

Just for plinking & paper punching. Never used it for Hunting. Loaded it over 2400 in Spl & Mag, 14 & 16 Grs. Mild on the recoil & No leading. Use WW & 1/8 lb of pure Tin. Per 20lb pot. Was along time ago tho, Whats Tin worth 2-Day ???? My 2¢. Russ.

20-21gr of 2400 is my best load for the 235gr GC SWC. It is an almost perfect load for my guns.

I prefer a plain based bullet in the pistol, mine is a 5 1/2" Redhawk. I prefer a gas checked bullet in the rifle. I'm not sure where a contender fits in that. If you go with a 429421 and a 429244 the weights are close enough they should have nearly the same impact point on a target. Gianni

ive used the 215 and its a good bullet. I hate to admit it but have never shot the 429244. Ill got this way with you though and tell you that the rcbs 240 swcgc is the most accurate mid weight 44 bullet ive found and this comes from testing in many many 44s.

I have been using a Lyman 429421 non gc mold for my .44 mag. I seat them to 1.7" and am using 21.5 grains of W 296. I get 1.5" at 50 yds off a bench in 2 different 44,s. I am lubing with Lyman orange and get no leading. one gun is a Ruger S.B. the other is a Ruger R.H. both have 7.5" tubes.
