View Full Version : Headstamp help! *I*

I purchased 300 rounds of 38 brass from a member here on the board that was SUPPOSED to be starline. Turns out the headstamps are all *I* NOT *-*. However considering what I paid for the brass and what quality it appears to be I am really not complaining that it isn't actually starline, it will do what I need it to do. BUT my question is what the heck IS this brass? I have never seen a *I* headstamp. I can probably get a pic if it will help but that's a pretty straight forward description.

Thanks

Yep that's what it looked like jonp.

So what's the story with Independence brass? I mean other than the short blurb in that link?

That's what I like about this forum . . . "you learn something new everyday!". I pretty much just shoot "range brass" for my 38s and have purchased a bunch of it over time. I never have seen that headstamp - interesting and an interesting link! Thanks!

A little off topic, but thanks for those head stamp links. They answered a question on some Portuguese made 7.5 Swiss brass.

Independence as indicated above. Cheap practice ammo company but I've found brass to be very serviceable. Definitely not starline but sure as heck ain't Amerc either. After breaking off a few primer decap pins, I toss all Amerc brass.

CCI does indeed makes Independence ammunition/brass. I bought 2 boxes of .357 158 gr JSP for a song, and the bullets look exactly like scaled down Gold Dot SPs that I load for my .44 Mag.
Had to clarify, so this post is corrected now.

Why would starline make brass without their headstamp? Not confrontational, just curious.

Oooooooops. Forgot the Head stamp. In the rush to produce quality, and quantity, with several head stamps, such things can happen.

Yeah I have had brass with no headstamps at all a few times. I figure, as was said, somebody was just in a rush.

The Independence brass seems to be good stuff, and like I said, even though it was stated it was starline, no biggie. Mistakes happen, no big deal, particularly considering what I paid for it. It's all good.

.38 S&W brass without headstamp markings were not intended for small arms use. They were mfg for some other military use like artillery or flare ignition or something similar. Quite a few years ago there was a bunch of this brass sold off via http://www.govliquidation.com/.

Not to say it isn't usable as .38 S&W cartridge brass... it is.

See that's why I love this board. I learn something every time I turn around!

Thanks Dutchman!
