View Full Version : Slightly related questions on Marlin 94s and Puma-Rossi 92s

Two slightly related questions:

1. Has Marlin made the M1894 rifle in .454 Casull, .475 Linebaugh, or .480 Ruger?

2. Winchester's M1892 was offered in .44-40. According to Cartridges of the World, maximum length of this cartridge is 1.92 inches. Puma-Rossi offers a M1892 copy that chambers .454 Casull and .480 Ruger. It is not available from the manufacturer in .475 Linebaugh. The Linebaugh cartridge's maximum length is 1.765 inches.

Is non-availability of Puma-Rossi M1892 in .475 Linebaugh a safety issue, or is it a "who the heck shoots .475 Linebaugh?" issue?

1. No
2. I don't know but I'd bet it's not chambered simply because whoever makes that decision doesn't feel it's popular enough to generate many sales. They sell a lot fewer .454s and .480s than they do the .357s and .44 Mags.

2. Probably a fit issue. Isn't the Linebaugh based on the 45-70? If so, the case diameter is to big to fit in the 92.

If you'll consider a WAG, I believe that the Linebaugh cartridge is still a wildcat. Yes, a lot of work has been done w/it but I see none of the big 3 selling Linebaugh Ammo. No one builds , commercially, firearms for wildcats. Just my op.

The Puma 92 I have in .454 Casull is sensitive to COL. The heavy boolits I cast have two crimp grooves, and both have to be seated and crimped at the front one to feed correctly.

A Marlin can't handle the pressure of the 454.....can't say on the other cartridges.

Trailblazer,
The original linebaugh was on a 45-70 case.
When Casull started to consider it for his revolvers Starline got w/him and redesigned a case w/a smaller rim to fit his cylinders. This is why we can now have the .480 Rug in the Rossi 92's'

Does any gunsmith offer conversion service of Puma-Rossi M92s, either .454 Casull or .480 Ruger, to .475 Linebaugh?

You might check with this guy, he's got a very good reputation on Puma work:

My guess would be that to open the chamber to fit a 480 doesnt leave much metal around the barrel thread area. The .475 runs at slightly higher pressure then the .480 and they probably dont want to take a chance on it. Im sure it could be made to feed as they feed a .454. The .475 is not a wildcat round. Loaded ammo is now available from a few sorces. I know the main weakness in the .475 94 marlin i had built is the area around the barrel threads. I shoot some full power loads out of it but try to not give it a steady diet of anything over 35000 psi chamber pressure. The marlin also has action weakness problems that dont exist in the 92 design. So im sure if i pounded on it enough id have a rattle trap. Nice thing is though with a 18 inch barrel a 400 can be pushed to 1500 fps with a mild load and theres nothing on earth that cant be hunted with a load like that. My main load is a 360 wfn at 1500. I know that i preach i hate wfns and do but that bullet in that gun just makes such tiny groups that ive learned to live with it. I shot one 1000 lb cow bison with it and dropped it in its tracks and thats the first time ive ever dropped one with one shot.

I have a Rossi Puma in 44 mag that weighs in a little under 6 lbs. I don't want to shoot a 5lb 10 oz rifle with a steel buttplate in any of the rounds mentioned. It's just NO fun.

see what happens when you are in the middle of a 257 project
you forget everything you thought you knew about the big-bores.
