I use it in a 44-77 and a 40-50 , with real good results ,

The issue with those 2 cartridges is being deshgned for smokeless powder getting enough Black Powder into the cases ( even compressing it) to obtain velocities expected would be impossible. Adding black powder slightly increases velocity adding bullet wieght increases range and power. The 308 would probably end up around a glorified 32-40 performance wise with black powder loads.Could be interesting to try but wouldnt be spectacular performance

You should see how it works in a full auto M16. A friend of mine was shooting his S&W model 29 and another person slipped some ammo loaded with black powder into the can of loaded rounds. Well when the first round went off my buddy was pissed off, because now he had to dissemble the gun to get all the black powder residue out of the lock works. A couple of months later came pay back with 223/556 loaded with black powder.

Works pretty good in the 30-30 and 32 win spl. Never tried it in the 308 or '06.

The RCBS 150gr. cowboy boolit has pretty big grease grooves and works well for this....

According to what I've read in several places - the 32 Special was designed to be reloaded with BP . . .

Look under "history"

Used to load 8mm Mauser with BP for use in a Gew.88 Commission Rifle.

So, in something like a .30-30 can you use a pistol primer or do you need a rifle or magnum primer?

It doesn't matter. They all will light your fire.

For 30-30 I used .3cc IMR4759 (could use anything similar) and enough FFg to fill to the base of the neck. A .030" card wad, 5/16" over the powder, and seat a boolit on top. I use the RCBS 30-150-CB because it has large lube grooves but most anything that carries a decent amount of lube should work. Use BP compatible lube. BP load data is pretty simple - but in bottleneck cases don't use FFFg and even Fg works fine. It gets pretty energetic. Adjust your amount of BP so the boolit you use is lightly compressing the powder.

OK, so if I do not want a duplex load will pistol or std rifle primers still work ok for BP loads? I'd probably be using 2F.

Yes to both. The pistol primer will seat deep in the primer pocket but most rifles will fire it off ok.

Yes it shoots quite well in the .30-30 as it does in the .44-77 and the .44-90BN and the .45 gold cup as well.
The only problem shooting it in the .30-30 is cleaning the brass using the old long ceramic media it gets stuck in the case, but the SST pins I have work good cleaning the small hole brass.

And I had to wipe the bore after every shot when I tried straight BP in the 30-30.

Another vote for a duplex load. I use 4227 but there's no magic in the smokeless powder, it's there only as an anti fouling agent to enhance combustion of the BP solids. This allows use of pistol primers. There is a school of thought that says use the hottest magnum primers with BP but in my experience this causes scoring and makes cleaning the BP residue out of cases and barrel much more difficult. I also like a generous lube cookie between card and bullet as another anti fouling aid.
