Been away for a while, working on the house. Went out with the S&W 629 44 Mag. 4 inch barrel. Shot a bunch of Lee 310s and 240 SWCGC. Both with 296. This is what I brought home.

Factory rubber grips? The difference in felt recoil between my 4" 629 and my 7.5" Redhawk is substantial. I can shoot 320s over a case full of WW296 for hours to no ill effect in the Redhawk. Half a box of Keith boolits over 2400 in the 629 and I'm done. :(

It's the factory rubber grips.

Yeah I got tired of bleeding after each range session and switched mine to a set of wood round butt grips from Altamont and it's much better now (no bleeding anyways). I still leave the heavy loads for my Rugers though. The Rugers are so much more comfortable for some reason.

BTW, any idea what your throats measure? Mine are tight at .4285"-.429"

My 4.25" 629 that I purchased about a year ago leaded like crazy, throats were 429 and the bore was 430, quick reaming of the cylinder and its happy as a clam now.

I haven't really measured the throats but a .430 XTP will fit through them.

You got lucky then. I can't even hammer a .430 XTP through mine.

It's used so maybe somebody opened them up. I just assumed I would have to do it myself. It's on it's way back to S&W now, I noticed when I bought it the front sight was crooked. S&W sent me a Fedex label.

Ah yes. I just sent a Blackhawk back to Ruger for the same issue. I had it back in less than 2 weeks, sight is nice and straight up now. They covered shipping both ways.

I have a 629 backpacker in 44 Magnum with a 3 inch barrel. Recoil is brutal as the metal back strap just pounds right back into my palm. For a long time I wished it had a real wrap around rubber grip, instead of the 2 piece split (exposed back strap) factory Hogue grip it came with.

I found a solution however!

The Hogue X-frame recoil taming grip from the big 500 S&W Magnum will fit on the 629. It also fits on almost all of the other K L N or X-frame Smith revolvers. The extra padding and cushioning across the back strap is a huge comfort when it comes to felt recoil. The large wrap around grip is great at taming recoil, and not such a greatly kept secret over at the Smith and Wesson forum.

The bad news is that unless you already have an X-frame gun to borrow the grip from, you pretty much need to order the grip from Smith-Wesson.com. I haven't found the grip for sale anywhere else. I got the X-frame grip, and I am so glad that I did. It makes shooting my 44 fun again, instead of just being painful.

That's great, except they won't ship outside the USA.

It is NOT the rubber grips. Hold tighter. The back strap of steel can do it like a shovel handle digging a large hole. You are getting slip and making a blister.
